The 13th Floor Elevators

I recently got the boxset called "Sign of the 3 Eyed Men"
It is very comprehensive and the quality of the discs is really great
Anyone an Elevators fan or a fan of Roky Erickson?

  • i really, really dig The Psychedelic Sounds of..

i just love that sound they have, the garage midrange brain burner. It's like a shoegazey scree that just makes your head feel like it's on fire, which is perfect in the summer when your head actually is on fire. But it's all rooted in this incredible surfy melodic psych with amazing singing. Just amazing singing. Roky sure can wail

yeah man, i like this band a lot

  • like them loads

but i wouldn't have a comprehensive knowledge of their back catalogue

  • amazing band

i only really listen to The Psychadelic Sounds... and Easter Everywhere though

  • I'm glad you guys like them!

I got the boxset for my birthday coming up here, which I actually share with Roky Erickson as well as Ian Curtis, haha
    Easter Everywhere is my favorite
For those of you who want to hear the creepiest, most far out song by them, download "May the Circle Remain Unbroken"
I think it's my favorite Roky composition

The boxset consists of a big hardbound book with all of these rare photos and info about the making of each album
the ten discs comprise of live material, of course mono and stereo versions of Psychedelic Sounds and Easter Everywhere, as well as two "lost" albums, and more
it's worth purchasing and it will knock you out!

  • I'm an Easter Everywhere girl

and despite the price tag (and the duplication in the mono versions) I'm really tempted to invest in this. The 'lost' albums- proper albums or a load of old filler? It's a bit of a leap of faith, but I'm poised to leap.

    • The 'Lost Albums"

aren't really proper full albums, more like alternate versions of existing albums. The first one mainly consists of tracks that turned up on the fake live album and early versions of tracks from "Psychedelic Sounds". The second one is just the un-overdubbed versions of the 4 Roky tracks from "Bull of the Woods", with two other unreleased songs, and two unfinished backing tracks. If you already have the Charly "Psychedelic World" boxset, you're only missing one proper track from this box.

Which isn't to say the box isn't worth getting, cos it's pretty amazing. The sound quality (particularly on the live tracks) is a massive, massive improvement over previous releases (not in some kind of vague audiophile way, but like the difference between listening to a CD or a badly-tuned AM radio). And the whole package - particularly the book - is really well put together.

It's well worth £75, though - just don't go expecting lots of previously unreleased songs.

  • One of my favourite 60's bands

along with United states of america and Strawberry Alarm Clock

I saw this on a forum to download the other day, might get it but sometimes having to many songs of a band you really like can detract from how much you love the original albums you've been listening to for years......maybe

  • They were brilliant

There's a really interesting article/interview on Roky Erickson in this month's Uncut.

  • Big fan of the 13th Floor Elevators

didn't they use a jug to make the wobbly noise? Also there is a film out about Roky "YOU’RE GONNA MISS ME".

  • brilliantbrilliantbrilliant

i *ahem* downloaded the boxset....not had chance to listen to it all yet
