British Music Week? (anyone know anything about it-centric)

GutterSnipe [Edit] [Delete] 11 replies 13:34, 6 July '09

So my band has been 'chosen' to play there, but there's potentially a price tag attatched and I'm pretty skeptical. We might be able to get sponsorship for it but otherwise would have to fork out. I really don't know that much about it, the official website looks fairly rubbish. Has anyone played there / know anything about it.
Advice much appreciated...

  • I'm pretty sure I've been to British Music Week gig

a couple of years ago. Pretty poorly attended with a disparate bill - which was par for the course for a Lark In The Park gig.

There was a bunch of these on at venues all across London, some of them were free. I kind of got the impression that there was no unifying theme, no real promotion of these gigs as part of some huge 'event' beyond bog standard press releases. The fact that it's made zero impression on anybody kind of gives a clue to the importance of BMW.

I'd imagine venues/promoters are just asked if they want to do something as part of BMW, and then it's just business as normal. Including pay to play if that's what they usually do.

    What's the venue/promoter?

  • Thanks very much for the replies.

  • Been there and Played

We played at British Music Week a couple of years ago and we got discovered by V2 Records that's when deals meant anything..Alas, V2 did'nt do much with us so we folded after a few years. For us then, it was a good opportunity as it put us in front of booking agents and people that matter in terms of the music business. It was the best opportunity for me but I'll advise you, times have changed now, you can get in touch with booking agents online via facebook, myspace, etc so don't neccessary need BMW for that.. But, I'll attend as its good for networking.

  • Never paid to play, and got all that was promised

hey there, I am finding this rather entertaining. Guttersnipe, I guess you were referring to a marketing or advertising package you were offered and advertising with a guaranteed option to play? not Pay to Play - We were honoured to be selected for one of their special packages or even asked to be part of this event and led to V2 discovering us.

"christs_chin" saying that they should be featured on watchdog after the little information above is a bit pre mature if not ridiculous.

"Rockefeller" - saying "I'm pretty sure I've been to British Music Week gig" indicates you are not positive that you were at one of their gigs, and it may of been something else?

"MrLive123" con artists, strong statement to make, these guys have been around for years and run several other international events that we have attended, with some really big names attending and i recall the mayor of London - "Ken" at the time having a lot of good to say about it and thats why we decided to take them up their offer. I think if you spoke to them directly you would see they are only trying to add value to the industry by creating an event like Midem that happens in Cannes which most of could not afford to attend and bring it to us locally.

Just my thoughts as I will attend again this year.

I love slagging off the next guy if it’s truly due, but I think Guttersnipe was looking for some constructive advice from people that have actually attended and seen benefit. It has come along a fair way since the event we had and i think the work they have done on the website is far better than we had a few years ago. i saw this post a few weeks ago http://www.godisinthetvzine.co.uk/forum/thread_detail.php?id=624142709&catst=mtb , looks like a worthwhile event to me.

Anyway, had a long day and crap like this is just unnecessary and not helping anyone

    • So what band were you in?

And why have you directed me to a BMW press release rather than an independant source?
