Rate those female pop stars which are about at the moment
Let's say... Little Boots, La Roux, Marina and the Diamonds, Florence and the Machine, Ladyhawke. I would go like this:
1. Marina (AMAZING)
2. La Roux (Don't get the hate - each single's better than the last.)
3. Ladyhawke (Nothing on the album quite matched 'My Delirium', but still some quality tunes.)
4. Florence (Really like that "This is a gift" song - not sure about the rest.)
5. Little Boots (Don't understand why she's being so hyped up - most of her stuff is utterly run-of-the-mill and indistinctive, although her new single is alright.)

Little Boots
I've only went out of my way to hear one full song by each, so I'll go by that.
1. 'Back of the Van' by Ladyhawke - She should've just written this as Stevie Nicks' comeback song, I reckon, it's so good.
2. 'New In Town' by Little Boots - Really boring until it gets to the chorus, which makes me bounce like a big jessie. It lends itself to a great dance routine, which the video sorely lacks.
3. 'Bulletproof' by La Roux - It's good, but there's no great big step up between the verse and the chorus that is essential to a pop song. It just runs straight.
4. 'Obsessions' by Marina and the Diamonds. I don't like songs like this. And no, Zapsta, don't reply "You don't like great songs?" I believe this was her first single? It's too ploddy for a first single. At first I thought it would explode into 'A Thousand Miles' by Vanessa Carlton, but it doesn't. (I'm listening to 'A Thousand Miles' right now - it's such an incredible song, it needs so much more attention. Amazing, amazing, amazing.) I don't like her voice either. She reminds me of thingy, what's her name... Imogen Heap. Yeah.
5. That one about a rabbit heart by Florence's Machine - Shite.
In conclusion, while Ladyhawke's song was brilliant, it whetted my appetite enough that I felt I didn't need to hear any of her other songs. The rest, however, left me so disillusioned that I shan't listen anymore.
Okay
Now what order would you bang them in?
Easy.
1. Marina
2. Marina
3. Marina
4. Little Boots
5. Florence, Ladyhawke
...
101. La Roux
Another thing about Florence:
Her use of all these "hip" producers like... erm, Paul Epworth? It's not 2005 anymore, hen.
I know what you mean about Bulletproof but when you hear it for like the third time it's brilliant.
Hay
I saw Florence & Her Machine in 2007 and I said to someone on this very messageboard that I thought she would be on Jools Holland as the token kooky act that gets one song within a year. I didn't like her very much at all and she kept talking bollocks between the songs. But there were a small group of people who were going crazy for it.
Idk about the rest though. The first i've heard of Lily Allen was tonight on the Glastonbury highlights show so I am sort of behind. Friendly Fires weren't as bad as I thought they would be on it either
Is that because I put them as my nightmare band in your thread?
Yes
I wasn't blown away or owt but everyone in the band was playing percussion and that was sort of cool.
Oh man, I hate them so much
It's like they want to be Muscles, but they'll never be Muscles.
idk who they are
There is a very fine line w/the entire band using percussion though I know that. Either it's cool or you look like tools. They were ok though I wouldn't say I actively disliked em
Muscles!
http://www.last.fm/music/Muscles
Doesn't the "and the Machine" part of Florence's name just sound like a vibrator?
Did Friendly Fire beguile you with the singer's dance moves?
idk if I noticed the moves were they good
He was doing that 'I know how to use a microphone thing' where they move it miles away from their gobs when shouting. And everyone had a cowbell type thing.
Aw, when I saw some highlights
the singer was dancing like a full on gay uncle at a summer BBQ. It was really funny. Especially since he looks EXACTLY like my friend and his brothers, and it turns out he also dances the exact same way as them. MEGALOLZ! None of the songs penetrated me however.
The song I heard did not penetrate me either
but it wasn't BAD, which can make them look good on a particularly bad Glastonbury highlights day.
None of my uncles are gay afaik, that's probably why I didn't notice.
OKAY, WE GET IT, YOU DON'T HATE FRIENDLY FIRES
Quit breaking my heart.
sry
:(
Lady Gaga uber alles
Marina 3/10 for music + 8/10 for other criteria = 11
Little Boots 2 + 6 = 8
La Roux 1 (+3 for remix) + 5 = 9
Florence (haven't heard any songs) + 3 = 3
Lady Gaga 3 + -10 = -7
Ive never heard marina...
But out of them: La Roux, Florence, Ladyhawke, Little Boots.
Not a massive fan of any of them but I quite like some la roux and ladyhawke tracks and I shamefully quite enjoyed the Florence tracks I heard on the glasto coverage.
Is Marina & the Diamonds' album out yet? I sure haven't seen it anywhere. If not then I think it's not really fair to put her in this "race" since the other atists here have debuts we can judge them by.
I like her single 'Obsessions' quite a bit but I'll reserve a final judgment for her album, and I can judge all of the artists on that. A judgment made on a few singles and a couple of videos is just not a good platform on which to make a fair assessment here. Anyways...
(1) Florence & The Machine ('Lungs')- Heard the album twice and it's easily more interesting than the others - can't understand the disaffection by some.
(2) Ladyhawke ('Ladyhawke') - At Christmas, I would have given this the top slot as I was really, really enjoying it. It's lost it's initial impact now but it's still a very fine pop record.
(3) La Roux ('La Roux') - Only heard her album twice and it's alright but fails to keep me interested throughout. Good singles and some nice little 80's retro touches, stand out.
(4) Lady Gaga - Hmmm...I have her album but have never once bothered to listen to it all the way through so I can't make a fair judgement. I like 'Pokerface' quite a lot and 'Paparazzi' is growing on me a bit, but I don't think I am in a position to put her anywhere other than the bottom of the pile right now.
Shit, I missed one...
(3) Little Boots ('Hands') - I'd put this at joint three with 'La Roux' because it's a mixed bag of fairly decent pop songs and some disposable filler. Then again, I've listened to it a bit more than La Roux, so 'the quif' could pull ahead - we shall see.
They're all a little meh
1. Ladyhawke (My Delirium is ace - Paris is Burning is dull, as is Back of The Van. Tried to listen to her album, but got bored halfway through.)
2. Marina (Lovely voice, mediocre tunes. Could be quite good in the future)
3. Lady GaGa (Relentlessly cheesy and overproduced, but there's something there... Just Dance is gloriously bad. She could be the new Britney.)
4. Florence (Quite liked 'Dog Days Are Over' but she has the horrible habit of oversinging EVERYTHING. She really is a classic case of over-egging the pudding - her songs are all crowded and cluttered, and try to do too many things at once. Also, she seems to rip off Bats For Lashes a bit, esp. in Cosmic Love)
5. La Roux (I don't like In For The Kill, but Bulletproof's pretty decent)
6. Little Boots (Dreadful voice, dreadful songs, dreadful clothes. New in Town is the worst thing i've heard in quite a while.)
Hmmmm
La Roux - I've come around to the fact that I actually really like her music now after initially thinking it was duff. She's also really, really hot. She wins by a long way, basically.
The rest - that Ladyhawke song My Delirium was dead catchy, haven't really liked any of the other songs of hers to the same extent. Florence & The Machine - annoying. Little Boots - boring. And as far as I'm aware I've never heard any songs by Marina & The Diamonds. So there we go.
...
That song she does came on in HMV and I didn't recognise it at first and I was thinking 'fuck me, this is a summer pop song and a half'. It's like this year's American Boy or something. And she is way hot in a blade runner type way.
So yeah, I'm converted. It's no "I'm on a Boat", but what is?
very little gets near I'm On A Boat
except for a nautical-themed pashmina afghan
Florence has been around for years- well about 2
she's not manufactured in that sense. Gaga is the most affected and fake popstar around if you ask me.
pretty much my least favourite musical trend thats ever happened.
everything is awful
Is it a musical 'trend'?
Or just music from a gender other than what you seem to expect?
No
I think we can safely say its an 80's synth pop revival
-
uhhh, because solo male popstars TOTALLY outweigh female ones?
this post makes literally zero sense. if you dont see some similar defining features to the artists listed other than gender, you're a bit retarded.
Florence is the only one who actually has raw talent
the rest of them have no future little boots, la roux wtf
i've never even heard of marina so ...
Ladyhawke - that hit of hers is pretty good
little boots - i quite like that remedy song even if it is a bit bland
florence
le roux - don't like
Lady Gaga?
wtflol?!
Marina is pretty amazing! great live and mowglis road is one of the catchiest songs I have heard, definietly one to watch for.
Little boots is a bit on the dull side even if some songs are not bad
Florence is a bit dull on record but really good at live gigs,
my two cents
1. Little Boots - Entirely up my street. Two song sag in the middle and excruciating hidden track aside, the album is brilliant, one of my favourites of the year.
2. Ladyhawke. Really very good, if lacking a killer single.
3. La Roux. Love Bulletproof, quite liked In for the Kill, got a feeling they'll be the best two on the album so not got it yet.
4. Florence - Quite like that Rabbit Heart single.
5. Lady Gaga - All style, no substance, completely hatstand.
Skream's remix of La Roux's In for the Kill >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> anything else in this thread (probably)
OK
1. Ladyhawke-catchy singles, not annoying
2. Lady Gaga-catchy singles, good production, good popstar, good live show
3. Florence-kinda hot, tolerable single
4. Little boots-seems a bit boring
5. Marina-not familiar with her
6. La Roux-god awful. I still think this is the result of a bet between two record execs to see who can flog the worst artist. Did she make her songs on garage band? Horrific voice.
But yeah, it's really funny seeing all these articles in things like the Observer praising this new line of 'interesting' female pop stars, when in fact they're the complete opposite.
lady gaga
is so far ahead of all the others its not even worth putting her in the same debate.
out of the other's la roux at least has one or two genuinely catchy songs, despite being a bit of a bellend in interviews. the rest are all dire.
that's kinda true.
I'm not a big fan of la roux, but I must say that little boots is far worse. her performance at glastonbury was so... abysmal. boring. I mean... wtf??! please! who buys that sort of... god!!!
but yeah.
lady gaga wins. without a shadow of a doubt.
Cripes
1. Ladyhawke wins by having one good tune
Joint last place - The rest of them. La Roux is dull, Little Boots more so, Florence and Lady Gaga are just dicks, and I've not heard the other one. Maybe she's amazing.
I don't like any of them, especially La Roux
La Roux: shit, full of herself, intolerably irritating
Ladyhawke: shit, boring
Little Boots: boring
Florence: few decent tracks, great voice, album isn't that good
Lady Gaga: although she has well-crafted pop songs, full of herself, contrived quirkiness, thinks she's a lot better than she is
Marina And The Diamonds: boring
La Roux
is ok, but I made the mistake of watching a video of her's. She is well evil looking. Quite beautiful, but grumpy as hell. It feels like at any moment the song will pause and she's going to snap at me for not buying the right kind of cheese, or something.
Ladyhawke is the best by far, for me. I've been listening to the album alot, although skipping 3-4 certain songs every time. there's a good, smokey atmosphere on it.
