Tough, but I thought his set at Glastonbury was fucking immense.
This:
Tupelo
Deanna
The Weeping Song
Lay Me Low
There She Goes, My Beautiful World
1. Paper won't leave you henry
2. Do you love me (parts 1 and 2 both ok?)
3. Abbatoir Blues
4. Into My Arms
5. Red Right hand
God damn it this is tough. There are at least another 10 that I can't believe I'm ommitted. The man is (Nocturama excepted) a quality song creating machine.
Yeah, I was going to say "do a top whatever you want"
because I was thinking up a top twenty, but limiting yourself to just five is more fun/horrible.
er
off the top of my head, and this could well change;
Straight To You
The Mercy Seat
There She Goes My Beautiful World
Red Right Hand
We Call Upon The Author
this seems as good a place as any to ask...
where to start with nick cave?
new un probably.
that's where i started anyway :)
Let Love In or Tender Prey, I usually suggest.
I started with From Her to Eternity, then worked forward, then went back to The Birthday Party/Boys Next Door.
I started with Henry's Dream
and it remains my favourite Nick Cave album
Was about to make this thread
as of today, I have heard every single one of the Bad Seeds' studio albums.
I'd consider these 5 to be amongst his best:
The Carny
Oh My Lord
And We Call Upon The Author To Explain
The Mercy Seat
God Is In The House
The Mercy Seat
The Weeping Song
The Ship Song
From Her to Eternity
Nature Boy
do Grinderman songs count?
Of course they do.
The only ones I'd say wouldn't count are ones like 'Stranger Than Kindness', but Blixa Bargeld and Anita Lane wrote that, and 'Shivers' by Boys Next Door, but Rowland S. Howard wrote that, so they're technically not Nick Cave songs, even though they rank among my all time favourites.
Stranger than kindness is a tune and a half
"tell me I'm dirty..." very very unsettling
the ship song = the shit song
Lay Me Low
Straight To You
Stagger Lee
Tupelo
People Ain't No Good
in no order
the weeping song
o children
its a wonderful life
red right hand
probably a ton more
Not a big fan but it's obviously
The Ship Song.
Hmm
The Witness Song
Straight to You
Papa Won't Leave You Henry
We Call Upon the Author
There She Goes My Beautiful World (or The Curse of Millhaven)
can't choose
but Messiah Ward deserves a mention
DEANNA
this also makes me love the song more
JAGGG

not listened to him in ages
but I seem to remember Stagger Lee being the most badass song ever written, so that.
Also: Loverman, Fifteen Feet Of Pure White Snow, Abbatoir Blues, Release the Bats, and the entire Murder Ballads album.
just remembered
his performance on Jools Holland years ago where the Bad Seeds played Abbatoir Blues with 3 pianos and 2 drummers, Youtube it, amazing stuff.
point of order
he didn't write stagger lee
Not originally..
but his lyrical interpretation is fairly distinctive.
Oh man I forgot Mercy Seat
how the hell did that happen? And what would I leave out? Argggggggghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
well, in no particular order:
damn enter button
* the weeping song
* from her to eternity
* When I first came to town
* City of refuge
* do you love me?
the Mercy Seat
Tupelo
Stagger Lee
Dead Joe
Nobody's Baby Now
Oh shit- I forgot The Carny!
Great song.
I'd go for (in no particular order, having not thought much about it)
1. 15 feet of pure white snow
2. Into Your Arms
3. The Mercy Seat
4. Hiding All Away
5. O'malleys bar (at least the first time, maybe replaced by stagger lee when i'm not in the mood for the full 15 minutes of murder)
I could probably do a list of at least 30 that'd change in order a lot depending on mood.
Your Funeral, My Trial
Red Right Hand (especially version on the Abattoir Blues tour album)
aaarrrgh tooooo hard. BUT
1. Stagger Lee
2. Lay Me Low
3. There She Goes My Beautiful World
4. God Is In The House
5. The Mercy Seat
Anyone seen his current shows, where he's been finishing with an absolutely incendiary version of Stagger Lee where Stagger Lee kills the devil? He did it at Glastonbury. Amazing. Can't wait for Latitude...
Not sure about current shows
But I saw him in 2005 and he finished with Stagger Lee slaughtering the devil. Amazing.
Way too hard to choose but:
God Is In The House
As I Sat Sadly By Her Side
The Mercy Seat
Get Ready For Love
O'Malley's Bar
All have particular resonance for me. Oh my god I'm so putting on a Nick Cave-athon right now.
so hard just to post five, but
tupelo
red right hand
papa won't leave you, henry
the mercy seat
15ft of pure white snow
No contest for number one, the remaining four are harder to choose
1) The Mercy Seat
2) (Are You) The One That I've Been Waiting For?
3) The Weeping Song
4) There She Goes My Beautiful World
5) Stagger Lee
Obviously
Do You Love Me? (part one)
She's Leaving You
No Pussy Blues
Darker With The Day
Lucy
but if you asked me again later I'd probably say something completely different
Actually yeah, ignore my list
I've just read the thread and seen some favourites that had 'slipped my mind'. Stupid thread.
Your stupid head!
1. Deanna
2. Loverman
3. Red Right Hand
4. More News From Nowhere
5. Today's Lesson
Into My Arms
Hallelujah
The Weeping Song
Lie Down Here (And Be My Girl)
(Are You) The One That I've Been Waiting For?
He's the bee's knees.
cave stompin'
weeping song, mercy seat, babe i'm on fire, a lot of the murder ballad ones
So many to choose
No Pussy Blues, Stagger Lee, There She Goes, My Beautiful World, God is in the House, People Ain't No Good.
(Are you) The one I've been waiting for
Breathless
People ain't no good
God is in the house
Tupelo
