A reductive and subjective anti-democratic list, in order of hairiness:
...Liars new album is due in the autumn. I am quaking in anticipation. Quite why beardy American indie bollocks is massive when Liars exist is quite beyond me.
not many good ones this year
i must say that the Animal Collective album is probably the best, though I was skeptical at first. I also enjoyed the Fever Ray album and Sunn O))) is knockout, despite average indie turds knocking it because it's not cute or tangible enough
And I love the entire Liars catalogue, we need new Liars!
i think the majority of people poo-pooing the sunn record on DiS have been the ones into doom & metal, oh and kik obviously. does being into a band that's been on the top of most indie tastemakers' lists for a few years now make you more or less of an "average indie turd"?
let's wrestle, kylesa & action beat for me
and the indie scene here has no appreciation for Sunn O))); they laugh it off and want to get into bands that are on iPod commercials. They are not cognizant of indie journalism aside from Pitchfork, though I think Pitchfork adore Sunn O))). I really don't need to justify myself; I am actually a newcomer to listening to current music, and a self-proclaimed music elitist who for a time listened to nothing but classical music :-)
hey, i got one for you: "you sound like the type that salivates all over your dead mother's cobwebbed birdie"
that's way more original
and yes, new Liars please.
over and out
Luke, I'm just a bit shocked by some of the inclusions, why La Roux and not little boots? Fever Ray and Sonic Youth, are these albums really that good? Sure they're interesting listens, but quality albums, I disagree. Above all however, I just get the feeling that this list marks a change in politic for the Quietus.
the Quietus for me has been about great music, full stop. Regardless of origin, 'cool', popularity or chances of curating ATP.
The La Roux album is there because it's better than the Little Boots album.
There's been no "change in politic" for the Quietus. Maybe it is YOU who has changed? EH? SAM? You didn't think of THAT did you?!
...no politic at the Quietus, which I think is reflected in that list, John and I just picked the albums that we've listened to most this year and liked, there's no agenda. La Roux I love, though I have a feeling that by the end of the year the Pet Shop Boys might be the pop record that's got more longevity for me. We'll see. And yes, the Sonic Youth album is brilliant, and yes, Little Boots is, sadly, bloody horrendous. Knock off Xenomania production, and the feeling that it's just trying too hard.
To be quite frank, I just anticipated a different list entirely, with the Caretaker or Martyn on at least, maybe Tim Hecker or the Gavin Bryers re-release. It's not a bad list, if anything it's very agreeable. I was just surprised that's all.
I've no affinity for La Roux (that Kitsune production doesn't do much for me) but not having heard the album I was just curious to know your thoughts. I rate the Little Boots' record partially for reason of sheer digestability. I wrote a gushing review of it back when and it still sees good rotation. Looks like we'll differ on that one - i'll send you the VoxPop end of year list in Dec and you can have your chance.
Thanks for the lecture.
