Other than System of a Down I can't think of any modern metal act who could reach that level (there are plenty of bands who are good enough, but none I think will live in the public mind in the same manner to be classed as "iconic"),
Look at Korn for example, its been 15 years since their debut, and if you'd have asked me at the turn of the last decade I would have thought they'd be at a Metallica equivalent point in their career, but its just gone off the boil for them (they were surprisingly good at Download tho, very impressed),

Doesn't escape that "All Hope Is Gone" was a MASSIVE letdown
But somehow those songs sounded cracking live mixed in with the older stuff
