And I can't decide which is the 10th, it's a toss up between Handsome Furs, Dark Night of the Soul (if that's technically 'out'), Bat for Lashes, Soap&Skin, My Latest Novel, St Vincent, Fever Ray... gosh, lots!
As I believe Mike is aware (and as I mentioned in the thread about tracks of the year), DiS has a whole week of Year So Far In Review stuff running on DiS next week.
haven't heard a single album this year i liked
cheers
I'm glad you've come round with the Casiotone album
I seem to remember you not being too keen on it at first. It's really grown on me too.

Calories - Adventuring
Obits - I Blame You
Oh and what I've heard from that NOFX album is rad, so that as well.
I've only bought 19 albums that have came out in 2009,
So a top 10 may be pushing it,
But I am liking
Mastodon
Gallows
Ghost of a Thousand
Alexisonfire
Need to give the Xcerts, Dananananaykroyd, Lamb Of God, Green Day and Architects a bit more of a listen to fully form my opinion.
And Marmaduke Duke
OK, go.

Is 'Rockwell' an album?
Is it not just 24 minutes long?
Yes, it is an album
A very very good one. It is short though, as you say. But it is longer than Afton, which wasn't an album.

Boring Indie Top 10
These are the ten I've listened to most so far this year. I suspect that Japandroids and Future of the Left will knock a few of these out once I've had the chance to listen more.
In No Order -
1. Manic Street Preachers - Journal for Plague Lovers
2. Art Brut - Art Brut vs. Satan
3. Handsome Furs - Face Control
4. The Thermals - Now We Can See
5. The Tragically Hip - We Are the Same

Favourite mini-album : the Tupolev Ghost

No
Saint Luminous Bride which was released in May.
Good shout on the Tupolev Ghost

its pretty fucking fantastic to be honest
9 for er...09
Go 09. Still to get to Animal C, Grizzly, Pains, YYYs....Emusic's not doing me many favours in NZ. Prix...Alphabetical
Andrew Bird
Bat for Lashes

SFA
wow, i dont think i've even got 10 albums this year....
Bat for lashes
Dananananakroyd
Andrew Bird
FUTURE OF THE LEFT
Animal Collective
Manic Street Preachers
Yeah Yeah Yeah's
Anthony & the Johnsons
...these are the only ones that make it so far. Marmaduke Duke was good for 5 minutes, Trail of Dead doesnt really have the longevity (or I just over indulged), Doves was distinctly average.
But Kong will be here in a few days. SO that'll probably be the best thing ever.
Oh. I forgot ISIS.
#1. Probably
I wrote this down somewhere but I can't find it...
Horrors - Primary Colours

Micachu
Future of the left
worriedaboutsatan

Then maybe:
Fever Ray

And... erm... Dark was the night - can I have that one?
Though I only adore about 3 of these (the first 3).
Honorary mentions:
Dalek / Malcolm Middleton / Aidan Moffat / YYY's / Trail of Dead / Shout out out out out
No great pop record yet alas. And I too suspect Kong will rule when I get it through my door...
...
I did a list somewhere else but these would go on my updated list:
Ganglians-Monster Head Room
Harlem-Free Drugs
Japandroids-Post Nothing
I preferred the Woodsist 12"
I think it is so much better than Monster Head Room, which sounds far too polished to my ears. Harlem was pretty good too, for some reason I thought it was last year.
psssss

William Basinski - 92982
Portable - Version
Tim Hecker - An Imaginary Country
..I think that's it
Again, in no order...
Because I am having a hard time categorising the last five with so many great albums out this year, I am limiting it to my top five. In no order:
Hospice by The Antlers
You And I by Cut Off Your Hands
Grammatics by Grammatics
Wooden Arms by Patrick Watson
Fantasies by Metric
Other contenders include Maria Taylor, Faunts, Andrew Bird, Josh Freese, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, ... And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead, Doves, The Veils, and a ton more.

Current 93 - Aleph At Hallucinatory Mountain
Nadja - When I See The Sun Always Shines On TV

Blut Aus Nord - Memoria Vetusta II-Dialogue With The Stars
Mastodon, Napalm Death and Gnaw maybe ought to be in their somewhere perhaps. Maybe Tim Hecker too.
Not quite 10 but it's been a really good year so far:
In mild order

Sucioperro - Pain Agency
Dananananaykroyd - Hey Everyone
..And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead - Century of Self
Mastodon - Crack The Skye
Isis - Wavering Radiant

Animal Collective - MPP
Patrick Wolf - The Bachelor
The Decemberists - The Hazards of Love
Dirty Projectors - Bitte Orca
Dananananaykroyd - Hey Everyone
Elbow - The Seldom Seen Kid (with the BBC Concert Orchestra)
is all I can definitely say so far
Bat For Lashes
This has been a really great year for albums so far and I hope it continues but for me I just think Two Suns is head and shoulders above the rest.
I can roughly split it into three categories (positions in these are interchangeable)
1-3: Animal Collective, The Horrors, Franz Ferdinand
4-6: Fever Ray, Dirty Projectors, Passion Pit
7-10: Kasabian, Maximo Park, Daestro, Manics
Thing is, some of these records I haven't listen to enough, but nothing seems to be matching the kind of stuff that was out in '02 or '05. Possibly because I'm spreading myself musically too thinly and my way of digesting music through meticulous ratings systems, looking onto it as how easy it is to sing back after five listens as opposed to the actual merit of songwriting/production, because nothing is as gripping as it was when I was 13. Sigh.
Okay, in no order
Animal Collective - MPP
The Horrors - Primary Colours
Wild Beasts - Two Dancers
Dirty Projectors - Bitte Orca
Phoenix - Wolfgang Amadeus (shocking name)
Sunn 0))) - Monoliths & Dimensions
Crystal Stilts - Alight Of Night
Mono - Hymn to the Immortal Wind
I got a feeling I'm missing loads, there are also a few I need to listen to more really ...
looking forward to BLK JKS...
...but so far:
1) Sunset Rubdown, Dragonslayer
2) Fever Ray, Fever Ray
3) Emmy the Great, First Love
4) Patrick Wolf, The Bachelor
5) Isis, Wavering Radiant
6) Handsome Furs, Face Control
7) Antony & the Johnsons, The Crying Light
8) Horrors, Primary Colours
9) Wintersleep, Welcome to the Night Sky
X) Nadja, When I See the Sun…
...and if those last two don't count:
Bat for Lashes, Two Suns
Dirty Projectors, Bitte Orca
for the moment:
1) Animal Collective - Merriweather Post Pavilion
2) Ghinzu - Mirror Mirror
3) Grizly Bear - Veckatimest
4) Franz Ferdinand - Tonight: Franz Ferdinand
5) The Love Language - S/T
6) Kasabian - The West Rider Pauper Lunatic Asylum
7) M. Ward - Hold Time
8) Yeah Yeah Yeahs - It's Blitz!
9) The Horrors - Primary Colours
10) Sunset Rubdown - Dragonslayer
Darn, didn't see this until tonight. And I posted my halfterm list at http://anulaibar.com/svammel/?p=338 (It's in Swedish, but you might like to see it anyhow) June 28. But well then here's my top ten, so far, in no order...:
Codes In The Clouds - Paper Canyon
Fever Ray - Fever Ray
Hauschka - Snowflakes and Carwrecks
Hildur Guðnadóttir - Without Sinking
Kronos Quartet - Floodplain
Kyte - Science For The Living
Nils Petter Molvær - Hamada
Robert Logan - Inscape
Soap & Skin - Lovetune for Vacuum
Tortoise - Beacons of Ancestorship
And as a complementary mention, it's not an album, but if it was, it'd be on the list: Ólafur Arnalds - Found Songs
top three
Mastodon - Crack The Skye
Jason Lytle - Yours Truly, The Commuter
Wolves in the Throne Room - Black Cascade
Thursday, Jeff Lewis, Danananackroyd and Bat for Lashes are all good but only those top three have made a real impact on me.
florence + the machine,
the horrors,
the maccabees,
peter doherty,
bat for lashes,
yeah yeah yeahs,
kasbian,
pretty much it
I feel quite sad that most people are saying the same thing
2009? cripes, i'm still catching up...
from the ones i have bought that were this years, i very much like
soap&skin
moderat
the sight below (which is fucking incredible)
maybeshewill
phoenix
...erm, i can't remember any more!
those Wixel ones are amazing too. an album a month! awesome.
Did Sic Alps release a record this year? (I lose track of release dates)
1. Woods - Songs of Shame

2. Cymbals Eat Guitars
3. AC - MPP
4. Grizzly Bear - V
5. Sunset Rubdown
6. YYY
7. Japandroids
8. Condo Fucks
9. Patrick Wolf
10. Dirty Projectors
I haven't heard Dino Jr or FotL and a few others listed above.
Can't think of a top ten yet...
(1) 93MillionMilesFromTheSun - S/T
(2) Animal Collective - MPP
(3) The Horrors - Primary Colours
(4) The Pains of Being Pure At Heart - S/T
That's about it so far. There's a few more albums that I like of course, but they aren't likely to make my top ten by the end of the year. I'm certainly not going to just stick them in because I can't think of anything else.
Too early for a top ten if you ask me.
1. Japandroids
2. Animal Collective
3. Sonic Youth
4. Grizzly Bear
5. Mastodon
6. The Thermals
7. Phoenix
8. Dinosaur Jr.
9. Dirty Projectors
10. The Antlers
some others that were good: Cymbals Eat Guitars, White Rabbits, Pains of Being Pure at Heart, and Isis.
I havent heard a lot of the albums in this thread
The Temper Trap "Conditions"
Dinosaur Jr "Farm"
Wilco "(The Album)"
Pink Mountaintops "Outside Love"
Karnivool "Sound Awake"
Yeah Yeah Yeahs "Its Blitz!"
U2 "No Line on the Horizon" that's right, U2 are up there with the best
The Mars Volta "Octahedron"
Antony and the Johnsons "This Crying Light"
Cross the Lips of Grace "The Epilogue of Suffering"
Mine:
1) Dirty Projectors - Bitte Orca
2) Animal Collective - Merriweather Post Pavilion
3) The Thermals - Now We Can See
4) St. Vincent - Actor
5) Sunset Rubdown - Dragonslayer
I also find myself rather pleased with the new Current 93 album, Aleph at Hallucinatory Mountain, and The Rural Alberta Advantage's new one.
Here, also not in order yet.
Animal Collective - Merriweather Post Pavilion
The Pains of Being Pure At Heart - S/T
Dan Deacon - Bromst
Dirty Projectors - Bitte Orca
Dinosaur Jr. - Farm
Fever Ray - S/T
Woods - Songs of Shame
Phoenix - Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix
Andrew Bird - Noble Beast
Antony and The Johnsons - The Crying Light
Worth Noting - I've only listening to Veckatimest once, and while I enjoyed it, I need to listen more before it goes on the list. Same for Horrors (only I've only heard it twice)
Also Note - The Crying Light, Noble Beast, AND Merriweather Post Pavilion all came out on January 20th whilst Barack Obama became president. Best day ever.
The standings so far
