Do I have to have a really good speaker set-up to appreciate Bitte Orca?
I listened to it on my fairly small and weak portable speakers last week and it did nothing for me at all. It passed me by as wholly unspectacular.
Do I have to devote my full attention to it? And moreover, seeing as some reviews have noted the strong production values and how good the record feels, does it require a big/expensive speaker system to be properly 'heard'?

I've only listened to it on my macbook...
Sounded pretty awesome to me, but I think the new macbooks have a well set up speaker set.
Its definitely a complex album sonically, but the songs are really strong an i'd imagine they would sound ok. Needs some attention paid and definitely gets better with each listen.
/\..totally agree with this
First listen i thought it wasn't my kind of thing at all, far too busy, but it wormed its way into my head after a few listens and it's now one of my favourites of the year so far. Looking forward to seeing if/how the album will translate to a live setting at EOTR.
You should listen to it on headphones.
You should probably listen to everything on headphones.
I shall do so in a moment
EVERY album needs a big/expensive speaker setup to be appreciated
you spanner
errr, not really
The following albums have sounded terrific on my small speakers in the past 24 hours:
Pretty Hate Machine
The Futureheads
Yank Crime
OK Cowboy
Either/Or
Era Vulgaris
so clamber down from your audiophilic pedestal you arse
hey, there's no accounting for taste
I don't think so
Have only listened to it on reeeally bad computer speakers, and on i pod, (with own £20 big headphones). Sounds tremendous. Was stunned by it from 1st listen.
It does have a good production, but a lot of that is to do with textures and choices of intruments and stuff; things that are robust enough to shine through even on the worst system. And it has a lot of value purely in terms of songwriting, anyway, AND you've got Longstreth's voice, which is incredible.
basically this^
I listened to it loads whilst I was revising back in May - on in the background relatively quietly... The first listen with some decent headphones was where the production clicked...
