i just can't get into their music - i keep thinking the band's taking the piss. is it just me?
Some of their stuff I like, some of their stuff I think is pish.
No doubt this thread will gradually expand into a monster where people go "you're wrong" then other people go to them "no, you're wrong", at which point the first group will wittily reply "you're wrong" and the cycle will carry on for ever but basically lots of people like them, lots of people don't.
they're a very polarizing act. I don't understand how they can cause such a split between people, i mean i have always loved their music, yet i know several people who can't stand them. The crazy thing is it isn't even a matter of if you listen to tons of obscure shit or not. When MPP dropped i played it for my roomate who listens to primarily mainstream radio rock and dirty south rap, but he instantly fell in love with it. its just beyond me how they can cause such a divide.
I liked Sung Tongs.. but the new stuff is a little dull.. I'd see em live again though, saw em support Mum which was odd but also good
try Feels or Strawberry Jam ...apart from a couple of tunes i found MPP well overrated.
BUT, I absolutely LOVE Strawberry Jam and I really like Feels. I don't know what song did it for me, Fireworks or For Reverend Green or something. Also, Banshee Beat is such a ridiculously brilliant song. IMO.
i don't think i could ever marry anyone that didn't love strawberry jam.
'what would i want? sky' is beautiful:
Listen to the Water Curses EP instead.
Or indeed Strawberry Jam.
'i think i can' and 'Graze' are tunes
I should probably give it another go some time though, to be fair.
i'm really tired of panda bear now, everything he does seems to sound the same. person pitch is a great album but from what i've heard from him recently it's just more of the same. more of the same only works sometimes.
the geologist one reminds me of strawberry jam era it's good how he doesn't remotely bother making it like a song.
But yeah, deakin destroys it.
Woozy, relaxing loveliness. Gateway to the rest of the album, although I've not really been compelled to delve into the back catalogue...
It's always baffled me though, they are not at all "difficult" they are at best "mildly psychedelic". They've got problems aplenty, wanky poetry lyrics, cheesy as shit melodies, sometimes horrible screechy american vocals (the fact PBear is getting boring is a good one too). I personally think they're brilliant but if you're going to criticise them...
I'd say that early Flaming Lips was less accessible (just in response to guy above who says that Flaming Lips get the balance a bit better)
Though I've only heard MPP, Strawberry Jam and Feels, and the latter only a few times. Though I think they do take quite a bit of listening as their stuff is pretty dense, but very melodic and engaging, certainly not difficult at all! I need to get into them more, actually.
it's starting to click neatly into place, I'm rather enjoying it now. T'others:
Merriweather I think is fucking brilliant. I really dig Person Pitch, growing a bit sick of it now but I rinsed it last year. Strawberry Jam is pretty good. Don't know the rest apart from Grass, which is hella awesome. Also, Avey's album was okay.
despite considerable effort on my part. I've come to the conclusion that maybe there isn't really anything to get. I reckon if it was 1989 & they were playing at an outdoor rave they'd probably go down a storm, but it's 2011 and I'm not at an outdoor rave.
That said, I love Panda Bear's 2007 Person Pitch album.
MPP is full of really nice melodies and such. Their other stuff is pretty good, if a little patchy. Despite liking Panda Bear, I never could get into Person Pitch. I tried but decided I wouldn't force it on myself. I actually like his new shit a lot better.
Absolutely can't stand them. Think they are beyond dreadful. And I actually quite like a lot of folkier stuff, and LOVE Fleet Foxes.
haven't been able to sit down and finish any of their albums at one go. What's with that?
Been one of my favorite bands ever since i heard Spirit They're Gone, Spirit They've Vanished & it was clear they were something a bit special. Following them has paid off big time as far as i'm concerned, the last 4 albums have been outstanding.
and are quite innovative by 21st century standards. What's not to like?
