It's wicked. Loving the time and effort that's obviously been put into it.
if even 0.5% of other things on the internet were that interesting/thought provoking/intellectual it would be 100000x the time sink it is.
the effort he has gone into is amazing, the score of the Zomby track :O
I was just thinkin about blackdowns wonky article http://pitchfork.com/features/grime-dubstep/6840-grime-dubstep/
will be reading it later.
am i the only person who thinks 'wonky' is a ludicrous term dreamt up by a journalist who's trying to start a scene?
i mean, i love a lot of the music that seems to be placed under this umbrella but when the term was given its first proper airing in that Pitchfork article last year, it made my toes curl with embarrassment.
it's like meeting someone at a party who describes themselves as 'a bit crazy'.
and is kinda inconsequential to the thrust of the piece anyway. yes its a stupid name, but I don't think its trying to shoe horn a scene where there isn't one. there's a clearly a relationship/similarity between zomby/rustie/burial/hudsonmo/bullion/flying lotus/anyone following that rhythmic template. after all, huge swathes of dance music subgenres are defined by their rhythmic templates. Take jungle for example (which is also a stupid name, bonus!). Second, to say Blackdown's some NME-esque hack trying to create a "shroomedelica" or "nu rave" is pretty laughable considering who he is and how much he does for the bass scene (http://www.blackdownsoundboy.blogspot.com/)
but besides, the article is a good read, just mentally blank the words wonky if its too much to bear
I mean it is a rediculess name but thats what I like about it. But it was never meant as a scene or genre its just a quick easy description of music from loads of styles be it hip-hop thru to dubstep and electronica... or what ever. The problem with it is that people take it to serriously and think its a genre. Plus I dont think a scene needed to be created, all this music is already part of a global one in that it all seems to be coming out of the dubstep scene or if it isn't coming out of there its been embraced by it. Blackdown knows where its at they guy has so much knowledge on bass music its rediculess.
Totally immersive concrete music critscism. Most music related writing neglects that actual 'critiscism' part of music critiscism and fails engage witht the music in any meaningful or interesting way, happy to simply say 'big tune' et cetera.
This post really is fantastic and supremely interesting. I especially like the though that has gone into the accompanying images. Lovely stuff.
Re: Wonky - its not a genre (read the article!) rather a few stylistic similarities applied across a number of genres. I always preferred aqua crunk as a name anyways.
