I was expecting this after the Mascis one.
the Lee Ranaldo one...
I've been pawning over a jazzmaster for ages..
and I dont like the lack of tone knob as jazzmasters can get pretty shrill.
The ranaldo one looks better it will be especially interesting to see what theyve done with the pickups as the wide range humbuckers ranaldo uses arent made any more, even reissues of tele deluxes that he harvested them from now just have normal humbuckers in with the wide range look, the originals were made made like single coils, with magnetic pole pieces rather than screws into a bar magnet, but theyve stopped making the magnetic alloy that they used, but these say wide range humbuckers voiced to ranaldos specs, hopefully this is more than ad talk and means more than the 'specially designed' jazzmaster pickups of J Mascis signature jm as I am 99% sure they are just the normal japanese strat-in-disguise jazzmaster pickups.
someone on offsetguitars.com emailed fender about price and stuff and they replied saying that sonic youth signature guitars are just speculation at this point, completely oblivious to the fact the website is up, weird
I work at Fender and trust me, we are not oblivious to what's going on. If you want prices, hit me up and when I get to work tomorrow, I'll get you the details.
just repeating what someone said on another forum where fender email said:'Thanks for writing in. At this time, there are no plans for any Sonic Youth guitars. I know there have been some talks, but nothing is definite yet. Keep an eye on our website for all of the latest news and information. We appreciate your interest, and thanks again for writing in.' maybe a customer enquiries person hadnt been told its official or something.
Do you know about the pickups in the ranaldo one, are they paf style or more like old wrhb ones thanks
I dont really understand is all as surely the dream would be to have your own signature guitar or at least make your own etc. just wondering is all
I wouldnt mind it would be a little bit lame, i'd seriously consider a j mascis jazzmaster if I didnt have a normal one already, and I really like the billy corgan strat. I think the lack of tone knobs on these though highlight the trouble with signature guitars, it maybe a set up that works well for sonic youth but seems completely pointless to take away a feature others would use, probably costs more than a fully functioning one aswell
but they stuck with them because they are hands down the best guitars ever
