Preferably some more obscure stuff. Ta.
seems like there was few big surf bands just lots of obsucure ones each with one or 2 good tracks.
I like the original surfaris (not to be confused with the surfaris). I think the revival stuff tends to be better, sounds like what I think the original stuff should sound like but doesn't, so yeah man or astroman and shadowy men on a shadowy planet.
Messer Chups are the best recent surf band i've heard, their album zombie shopping, another newer band the bookhouse boys have a surfy influence and are pretty good
Cowabunga! Is an excellent compilation set. It is split into the 4 "eras" of surf rock. Disc 2 & Disc 3 are particularly good. Nice combination of well known stuff and obscure.
but if you havent checked them out try out man or astroman
ahem,i recommend their album "experiment zero" from 1996
Vol. 1 is really good. It's not one of those out of print things you can get on the internet or anything ;) ;) ;)
the basic problem is that hardly any of these bands were ever even vaguely successful at the time; there are about 3000 surf records listed in John Blair's comprehensive discography, and only 30 made it into the Billboard top 100.
So very few bands ever managed to make an album, which is why compilations of lots of bands is the best you can do for the most part. Someone's already mentioned "Cowabunga!", which is great, though it's out of print now. Also out of print but relatively easy to find is a compilation by Guitar Player magazine called "Legends of Guitar, vol 1: Surf". More recently, and still in print, the "Birth of Surf" compilation is pretty fine.
Of the handful of bands who did manage to record more than 1 or 2 tracks, I'd recommend "Squad Car", which is a compilation of tracks by Eddie & the Showmen - not quite as technically groundbreaking as Dick Dale but much more consistent. Otherwise the best of Dick Dale is an obvious choice.
I've been listening to Man or Astroman and it's pretty much the sound I was looking for, will most definatley check out some of those comps as well. :)
