I think Scott 3 in particular has some spine tingling orchestral moments.
the 'introduction' to bryter layter is particularly glorious. someone mentioned serge gainsbourg's awesome 'histoire de melody nelson' up top which was arranged by a dude called jean-claude vannier - his own 'l'enfant assassin des mouches' is pretty damn decent too - a psych/funk/prog opera about a child fighting monster flies in a nightmare world.
and totally agree about Nick Drake and Scott Walker. Max Richter and Johann Johannsson are always amazing but in more of a classical way rather than being song based.
by Mansun springs to mind.
Overblown coke rock, but 3.40 onwards is pretty cool on the old score front.
...Sources Tags and Codes (the song) by Trail of Dead is pretty good. Right at the end of the album.
Literally about the last 2 minutes of music before they went totally rubbish.
I second JC Vannier and Scott 3, give 'Tilt' a try, espesh 'Farmer in the city.'
Also - 'Stranded in time' by The United States of America - frickin' amazing.
'Through with Bud' - Steely Dan
And, although they're purely instrumental -
Trilok Gurtu's Arkeology
and Basquiat strings
literally! etc, etc.
