Interested in taking a listen but don't know where to start. I know, very broad and vague, but you guys are THE EXPERTS
of which genre?
I can give you a horribly cliched list of bands who I like who happen to be Japanese, but it would be just as arbitrary as a list of guitarists I like who happen to be left-handed.
Boris (for the stoner overdrive fun and the experimental drone shennanigans)
Envy (for the melodic post-rock meets hardcore bellowing frolics)
Mono (for a clean and simple take on the old Godspeed formula)
I've probably forgotten a couple.
well i've been listening to a bit of Shugo Tokumaru lately, first Japanese artist I've ever come across and I love his stuff, so I'm just kinda wondering if I'm missing out on anything else similar from the islands (obviously the answer is yes)
Heaven in Her Arms
Heaven in her arms are like envy and Killie are more screamo.
But yeah, could have norrowed it down a bit.
as I said, stuff like Shugo Tokumaru ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LbfLycuhhjI ).
If you could tell me the Japanese equivalent of the Smiths or David Bowie I'll buy you a house tho :)
everyone loves these too:
Boris, Envy, Mono, Melt Banana, Lite
shonen knife/oneone/no cars/Yuki Kawana/Sputniko! and some others
and whatever Les Rallizes Denudes you can find - there is a lot out there, mostly bootlegs...
and Blind Baby Has Its Mothers Eyes first, because they are the best ones. YEH!
totally forgot about Guitar Wolf. amazing garage rock
Shonen Knife are an awesome shout too.
there is a great band called Te but i'm not sure what you'll be able to find about them, they're pretty small.
Although technically they're Anglo-Japanese immigrants. And boy do they rip the piss out of themselves for it.
We are Ninjas (not Geishas):
My favourites are Les Rallizes Denudes, they have an awesome awesome backstory too. My friend who is into all that stuff always raves about the Flower Travellin' Band.
New-ish stuff, Plus-Tech Squeezebox and Polysics, yes plz
It's so nice to see their name crop on on DiS. Cartooom! is such an amazing album.
Like a Japanese Devo. I saw them last August...Fantastic show!
Another great Japanese band
A lot of the ones mentioned don't really resemble the guy originally referenced though. I admit I've never heard of him & that's not really my cup of tea but maybe worth trying:
Maher Shalal Hash Baz/Tori Kudo
Yura Yura Teikoku
Nagisa Ni Te
Ai Aso/Michio Kurihara/The Stars/White Heaven
Once you get into the whole heavy underground there's massive potential though...As much as I love Cope I don't really feel that a lot of the Japrocksampler bands live up to the ones that came after the book cuts off (i.e High Rise, Fushitsusha, Kousokuya, Overhang Party, Mainliner, AMT etc...) but then again I guess it's an introduction to the roots of that scene.
Motoro Faam's "and water cycles" is the greatest instrumental album ever made and possibly the best album ever made full stop. takes a few spins to get into but once you do it gets under yr skin and doesnt let go.
Noble Records is a good start, they have Worlds End Girlfriend and Kashiwa Daisuke on their roster, both of which are very explorative glitchy post-rock maestros.
Shugo tokumaru writes goofball pop which is highly addictive and dancable.
Matryoshka write beautiful glacial pop. check out February Lifesave (November Edition).
lots more like Mono, Envy & Boris too. My favourite heavy Japanese band is Natsumen, not to be confused with Natsume.
seriously its huge japanese boy band youtube them :D
A fairly obvious choice
Well certainly the album casanova snake, had many a great night dancing about to this record with friends :)
unless you're being sarcastic, in which case you have killed me :(
Try My Dead Girlfriend http://mydeadgirlfriend.hp.infoseek.co.jp/
Silly me. Japanese sound artist type. If ambientish electronica is your bag you should snap up a copy of 'Sakura'
Mad Capsule Markets
Dir en grey
Fourcolor ( microsound group )
Boris (and their various collaborations)
Les Rallizes Denudés
mudy on the sakuban
Nobukazu Takemura (and his various incarnations)
Rin Toshite Shigure
And when I was like 14 I loved Asian Kung Fu Generation, who are like Tokyo's answer to Weezer
but not worlds end girlfriend. interesting..
Shiina Ringo/Tokyo Jihen
Yellow Magic Orchestra
Hazel Nuts Chocolate
does anyone know about/have seen tenniscoats recently? they're playing here soon and i'm quite intrigued.
not sure if they are featured in japrocksampler or not, i think they are more or less the same band with two different names. great weirdo/chant/drone/rock merchants, a bit like flower travellin' band without the monster riffs.
They both make amazing stuff, Goth Trad makes HUGE sounding dubstep I mean like ANTHEM sized HUGE but its still got that deep dub vibe going on. Quarta 330 is a strange one he crosses chip tune and dubstep and makes some of the stranges bleeps around, the way his synths play off each other are amazing.
are jazz/noise/good fun, and are apparently getting surprisingly big over there.
I also really like Ogre You Asshole, who sound like Modest Mouse with girlier vocals and less weird instruments.
