Listening to this for the first time in aaaaages. It's put a massive smile on my face. Shame they split. :(
unless yr listening to it you don't realise how many great songs are on it. its just one massive song after the next
every song could've been a single really. Not sure I even know which ones were other than Nightjoy?
all their singles were
nightjoy / taxi (fantastic plastic)
opening shot (split with motorettes kitchenware records)
outwards / nightjoy / stutter / method acting (30:30 records)
Any of them doing anything else?
chris / frog / nelson formed a band called black flashes but due to no myspace activity i think thats been patched
al had been messing about with some laptop/solo stuff but he aint bothered updatin that in ages
i hav heards rumours of other stuff springin up but nothing concrete as of yet
They were really good, barricades in particular was a stormer.
Kubichek should have been fucking huge. Easily the best debut of this century. Hope's Impossible was the only track I didn't absolutely love. Very, very sadly missed.
i thought nightjoy came out more than twice though? hmm..
maybe its due to the length of time it was about ...
the b-sides from the 4 most recent singles were all pretty great too
missed out the wee white label split with the motorettes they were sellin on tour with the motorettes
when talking about other bands, saying "we know we're better than all those other cunts"
respect is due
either The Futureheads or Editors, i can never remember which (most likely the former), anyway to my point...
their were a bunch of idiots at the front, and throughout the whole of their set, they were chanting "TITS" laughing and being pathetic towards the band. Then the Bass player from Kubichek climbing off the stage, grabbed this kid and something along the lines of "say that again and i'll fucking 'av ya"
ever since that, kudos to the band
They were epic both times.
Not Enough Night is a fantastic record.
and an obscenely high 'killer' to 'filler' ratio. It's a real lost gem.
Nightjoy's chorus is just class. I like how it's got this pure English sound to it, drawing influences from so many British post-punk bands and those Newcastle vocals too.
Lovely chaps to boot n'aw
Saw em for the last time in Glasgow before Al left, ace gig, real Mogwai-esque greatness in Start as We Meant To and Hope Is Impossible.
Have to say as much I love em, their weak spot was definately Al's vocals, dont really wanna say that as he is a top bloke, but might as well air it seeing as they are no more anyway.
Either way, still an ace wee band :)
and found it completelly boring
nostalgic feeling! I love this album, and agree they should have been bigger than they were. The last time I saw them was at that Futurefest thing on the main stage of newcastle academy, they had so much presence it was quite something.
Kubichek! and Clor were two bands I really wanted 2nd albums from...
but certainly not 'absolutely fantastic'! I think there is some misty eyed nostalgia here. If Kubicheck had gone big, I don't think you'd be saying that it was one of the best debut albums of all time.
Bands featuring former members of Kubicheck:
Love Bites & Bruises
is that not the motorettes... i know al is playing in manilla chapter
black flashes are definitely finished too.... had that confirmed by text message from one of them earlier
i for one thought it was fantastic ... all of those tracks were single material apart from maybe 2
from being from Newcastle at the same time as The Futureheads and Maximo Park, but not being as accessible as those two. People were expecting them to be the same and when they weren't as poppy, gave up on them.
Good band though and great guys. I saw them loads of times, the best time being in the cumberland arms the day q and not u split, they were angry about it and absolutely incendiary. Stutter was always a favourite, cos of Frog's contribution.
never heard of them before. i like.
