yay or nay ?
its a yay for me.
and I noticed they're on tour soon but I've been agonising as to whether I would drag myself to see them again on their own. They were very good when supporting Silversun Pickups last month (both times!) so if you haven't seen them it's worth it.
They have all the right ingredients to be my new favourite band! They're not quite there just yet though...
they any good live?
a friend saw em but said the singer was a bit too rock and roll for her boots apparently... Personally I think shes lovely though :)
the singer does look abit of a darling
they're aces, and friendly people too from when I have said hello at gigs.
Last year I found myself getting into quite a few new bands, all becoming constants in my listening habits, and bands that I would rave on about to others. But this year I've not really got into that many new bands, or there just hasn't been that much new stuff that has really made a mark on me. The Joy Formidable are one of the seldom few new bands that get regular weekly, if not daily, plays on my various music playing devices. Very much looking forward to seeing them at the Borderline.
Although I can't make any of their upcoming gigs :(
Best band at the Camden Crawl by some way. Although they were in the electric ballroom which can make most people sound great. Really solid album, great live band...go see!
saw them with future of the left and they were bloody brilliant. great album too.
really good songs and hot singer yayyy
Absolutely sparkling live - Ritzy has tons of charisma, and is an absolutely charming soul.
Their material is tip top, soaring guitars with sparkling tunes - they are currently a superb watch, their (relatively short) set has been honed to perfection and they are usually a fantastic watch. Their CD was a delight - and the boxed edition now goes for a bit on ebay.
How somebody can profess to liking Fight Like Apes and not see TJF is infinitely superior is totally beyond me, but that's taste.... I have been banging on about the band or months here and its nice to see that they are garnering the buzz they deserve.
I'm up for the Borderline - it will be the ninth time I have seen the band in about 12 months - it's a long long time since I have seen any band so regularly...
I was amazed to find out that two of the band were previously in Tracy Nixon - I had a CD of theirs and didn't recognise the connection - and a band called Sidecar Kisses.
Anyone who likes stuff like The Pixies, MBV, peak Breeders, should really like The Joy Formidable (recommended)
I put them on a DiS gig in Manchester in Jan 2004. With Future eX Wife who are now Black Spiders and Minus who are still Minus and a local band called Harem Pilots who were not very good but still had lots of fans.
I only heard them yesterday while I was checking out the bands playing at Dot to Dot Festival. Can't wait to see them live tomorrow!
Nope, just me then?
Anyway I am interviewing this band next month and I'm really looking forward to it. Ritzy seems very nice from the correspondence I have had with her so far. I'd be surprised if she really was "too rock n roll for her boots".
Oh and yes - excellent band.
a nice pop and with some god tunes but personally don't think they are near touching greatness. Not listened to them for a while though, so think I will have to give them a re listen to see what I think after lots of positive comments on here.
i mean if stereophonics or bullet for my valentine tour down here again before the joy formidable or manic street preachers someone's going to get stabbed...
by a country mile (was expecting to enjoy Titus Andronicus, Gang of Four and Sweethead more but TJF were so good we ended up seeing them twice).
but they'll definitely get those in time. Hints of greatness, tight live. Favourite British band this year so far for me...
Anyone listened to their new (debut full-length) album yet? Tentative thumbs up from me - there are some real gems on there, and not just the (4?) tracks carried over from 'A Balloon Called Moaning' either.
Just curious what everyone else thinks of it/them I guess...
- arrived this morning. Figured there'll be others on here who've heard it by other means.
im going to buy it on monday on my way home from work , how do the re-recorded songs sound? better than the previous versions?
Slightly more muscular sounding maybe? It's been a while since I listened to ABCM, so until I do a direct comparison i'm aware that i might be talking utter bollocks here.
You can't really tell as I thought they sounded good just the way they were
fantastic songs, buzzing sharp and sweet, they make a huge sound for only three of them, very charismatic, seem like smart, sorted people. i would be at the koko gig but it'll cost the best part of fifteen quid, i'm horribly skint, koko is not a great venue (and damn expensive if you want even one drink when you're in there) and the supports for this tour are laaaaaame. i'm going to have to wait until festival season :(
maybe the original ones won't be able to make it
and maybe i can save up £1 a week to go.
when did it get moved?
wonder why though - was/is there an nme show on the original date?
They're playing on a Saturday at a venue I've not been to before. I can make a weekend out of it but it wouldn't be worth it if they weren't ace live. It's a 2 1/2 train ride each way and crashing at a hostel and that.
- but there are very few bands I'd go through ^that for and they're not one of them.
and who else is on the bill? can make such a difference - if i didn't live in london i'd 100% come in for an electric ballroom gig with even one awesome support but if it's somewhere crap and other bands are rubbish it will kind of spoil your night. and entire weekend, by the sound of it.
think they're alright
Mm, yeahhh...but no. Close but no cigar.
and go and see them live. they are fierce.
They've been great both times live. Next week's Borderline should be a good one.
but also felt at the time that I would've liked it more if it were a bit rawer.
Even so, if it had've been released in a year that didn't feature so many other great albums, I probably would've talked it up a lot more than I did. Very keen to hear the new one.
no need to rush it, get stuff right. if they were desperate to be famous they'd be in yer face the whole time, on this tour and that. but it feels like they've been away for ages, getting their debut album proper right i guess...
a rare joyous band that sound fun on record. i've not heard the new album but i have it planned in my buying schedule and if they make it to the us i'll be seeing them
or are the best songs on the album the ones already available on Balloon?
But that could just be down to familiarity.
The album's a bit heavier/louder than I was expecting to be honest. Still, I'll tentatively say it's pretty ace.
the new ones do sound heavier, I agree.
I'll be giving it a few more listens yet, in any case.
