Kraftwerk is a given. Also have heard Superpitcher. Doesn't have to be electronic.
L'Etat Et Moi is great
are quite good. Heard them on the channel 4 'experience another language' adverts or whatever they were. They make cheesy indie but it's not bad - good to listen to for German revision etc.
Germany is the heart of a a lot of good modern electronic music. The labels Kompact and Bpitch control are two of my favourite labels with music from Apparat, Gas, ModeSelektor, Ellen Allien and lots more. Ricardo Villalobos is almost german (raised there, chilean background) and he makes some of my favourite dance music around.
Rhythm and Sound, Basic Channel and Maurizio have also released some amazing dub/techno albums.
A massive second to Can and Neu! as well.
http://www.myspace.com/leichtmetall ( and many things on Karaoke Kalk )
Giving Leichtmetall a listen - pretty damn good!
was my second favourite album of 2006...
Perfect for German revision this afternoon!
PALAIS SCHAUMBURG, their song telephon is brilliant
amazing german hip hop. think its on spotify....
you should also get Atari Teenage Riot! Pioneering anti-neo-nazi digital hardcore. also on spotify
To Rococo Rot
Grauzone, for some 80s-electro style stuff
Minimalist film noir soundtrack ambient, vaguely doomy jazz. Lots of stuff on spotify, 'Dolores' from last year is great.
Also ColdWorld, a one man Black Metal/Shoegaze project, sort of a middle ground between Burzum and Jesu, but with more adventurous melodies. I think someone on here recommended them a while ago. 'Melancholie' is on spotify, and worth checking out.
DIE EINSTUERZENDEN NEUBAUTEN
ELEMENT OF CRIME
DIE TOTEN HOSEN
DIE FANTASTISCHEN VIER
and of course TOKIO HOTEL (kidding)
Amon Duul II
Blahblahblah Krautrock aus der Arsch
King Khan's Shrines!
