Really quite astounding.
its just too good, i've listened to it so many times in the last couple of days. superb.
but it really does amaze me. I'm still not sure quite how it ends up sounding so peaceful; the shift in mood is incredibly subtle. I know you're holding out for the vinyl, but the CD packaging is well swanky so god knows what they'll pull out of the bag for the LP version.
Really digging the rest of the record, but the lyrics are massively lol-worthy.
i actually think its really kind of uplifting and happy in some kind of odd sort of way, listening on my headphones yesterday i really heard the ambarchi style sub-bass, or whatever its called, adds another level as well. i think i shall have to check out alice coltrane stuff. well i might just atone for my sins and buy the cd, southern lord does take ages to get stuff on vinyl sometimes. lyrics are awesome lol, on hunting&gatehring theres just this one bit where attila says something like its cold outside, lolscared. p.s sorry about never replying on last.fm i shall tonight.
I think I'd subconsciously blocked out the lyrics by the time of Hunting And Gathering, but I've never seen a more portentous set of lyrics than the ones to Agartha. Not to mention the tongues or whatever the hell's going on in the background of the second track.
You've heard Alice Wading by The Dirty Three right?
so I'll keep it brief, but yeah it's several levels above good. I guess you can compare the record as a whole to the direction Earth took with Hex / Bees, except Sunn O))) are taking a doom metal template and applying to classical minimalism rather than Americana. They've always been a band I've found easier to admire than engage with up until this point, but I can see that changing with Monoliths.
I've found them to be a bit of a knock off Earth project till now, with not masses to engage me. However, if they've diversified their sound, I might well be interested...
although the whole album is so good I couldn't really pick out a favourite. I've been playing Monoliths and Dimensions more or less constantly over the past 4 days, and it's still pretty much perfect.
The final minutes of Alice, with the horn solo and the harp, are just breathtaking.
I thought it came out this monday! So if the HMV nearest me doesn't have it they're never gonna have it, and I can't be arsed to go all the way to newcastle. Arse. I was looking forward to buying it as well.
it just got shipped early and leaked. i think monday is the street date proper.
