Lee 'Scratch' Perry
I'm beginning to become aware of how great this guy is, having begun to really study dub, reggae, jungle, etc, but I don't really know my way around this (to me) new and exciting world. Any tips on his best stuff? Would be greatly appreciated!
On an unrelated note, what's the name of the song in Slumdog Millionaire which uses gunshots as percussive sounds during the chorus?

Shit, it's M.I.A
I should have known that :S
Oh god there's millions of them!
I can't offer any advice because I only randomly picked up a couple and both of them were a bit patchy...good luck, though!
Yeah, that's my problem too.
The sheer volume of output is intimidating. It's sort of the same feeling I had when I first got into Tom Waits, 'Oh God, I'll never have time to listen to all this!'
I dont know much about dub
but I do know that it sounds insanly massive on a propper dub soundsystem. There is a huge one in Leeds called Iration Steppa's Sound System that is one of the biggest around and its the most intense musical experiance around. They play the track like halfway thruogh with the bass EQ down by liek half and its already a full body experiance then they just let rip and give you the full bass and it almost knocks you over. They start with old more mellow stuff then go onto mad new dub stuff with more intense dancy drums. It doesn't really coem across on vids as the sound cuts out as its to intense but here you go anyway...

Cheers dude.
if you play the vid loud thru a stereo
you acctualy hear some bass but its still not the same hahah
Every gig and live music experiance I have been to since hearing that sound system has been so quite and tame in comparison.
I should pop down the West Indies centre I only live up the road from it.
Sounds awesome, btw. Loving the skankin, too.
yeah
thats THE place for it round Leeds way. I need to get down more often its brilliant!
There is a huge one in June with 2 Soundsystems in the big room playing dub and 2 soundsystems in the back room playing dubstep. Now that will be LOUD!
Pick up the new Franz Ferdinand Dub album
Tracks 4 - 9 are v nice.
Will do!
essential lee perry productions
The Heptones - Party Time
Max Romeo - War Ina Babylon
Junior Murvin - Police and Thieves
The Congos - Heart of the Congos
definitely get these albums too
Lee Perry - Roast Fish, Collie Weed and Corn Bread
Scratch/Upsetters - Super Ape and also Return of the Super Ape
Scratch/Upsetters - Kung Fu vs the Dragon
there's a great LP dub collection simply called Upsetter in Dub which contains versions of the big 70's tunes.
However you may as well just buy the Arkology box set.
what a dude.
^ Good post. Agree with all of those suggestions
Super Ape is probably my favourite. Worth the cost alone just for the dub of the Prodigy-sampled Chase The Devil, called Croaking Lizard, with Prince Jazzbo toasting over it. Also, the cover art with a huge ape ripping up trees in one hand and holding a big joint in the other is awesome.
You should also buy Dub-Triptych, which has 3 Perry/Upsetter albums over 2 CDs (and costs about £5). It has a crisp remaster of the once-ultra rare Blackboard Jungle Dub, which is terrific.
what you need to do
is get yourself down to Sounds of the Universe/the soul jazz online shop
and buy every single souljazz compilation you can find. especially the recent Dancehall & Dub Echoes ones and all of the 'studio one' ones.
honestly, this is the best thing you could possibly do.
Apeology
Includes Super Ape, Return of the Super Ape and Roast Fish, Collie Weed and Corn Bread. Also, Heart of the Congos is amazing.
i really like the one...
where he's sitting in Switzerland dressed as a king on the cover... "From the Secret Laboratory", it's a really mad record: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Secret-Laboratory-Lee-Scratch-Perry/dp/B0000081B8
Also this 3 CD compilation of his old stuff (Arkology) that's been mentioned already is very good too. I've seen him a few times - he can be amazing live!
