Music to write essays to?

DangerousSnails [Edit] [Delete] 19 replies 17:39, 7 May '09

With uni deadlines fast approaching, it's getting around that time again when I actually have to write essays and as silence is boring, can people recommend me some music to write essays to?

something dreamy that i won't necessarily focus on too much. when i was writing my 15-page literary critique paper, i listened to a lot of the smiths. however, i still found myself spacing out every once and again and singing along!

  • Soundtracks

I went onto Spotify and listened to some movie soundtracks which really helped me focus whilst I was doing my essays. I find the "American Beauty" and "The Dark Knight" soundtracks really good to work to but I suppose that's just personal preference.

  • As my techno-head friend says:

"It's always good to work to a 4/4 beat." Trentemoller's 'The Last Resort' got me through my essays over xmas.

    • definitely

burning through maths work at the moment with a steady diet of pantha du prince, gui boratto, the field, popof, martyn and various other minimal/techno mixes. anything minimal and slow building works really well, i tend to find i appreciate it more than listening to that kind of stuff in any other setting

  • anything you're really really familiar with

it doesn't matter if it's loud and heavy or ambient, you have to be able to faze it out of your concentration and thats best done with stuff you've known for yonks.

if everyone here said go buy x cd it's perfect to revise to, you'd be too busy listening to all the new sounds on the cd you'd not heard before.

Is exactly right. Anything that just drifts through the consciousness. For me Ok Computer was a very successful essay writing album. Some drum and bass mixes that I had at the time were good too because we used to listen to them repeatedly at parties. Never hip-hop though. Too many frantic words coming at you.
