I just bought a load of albums to make me feel better (discuss and/or post what you've bought recently)

GalacticStar3ruption [Edit] [Delete] 61 replies 14:59, 7 May '09

cLOUDDEAD - Ten
Berri Txarrak - Libre
Xasthur - Telepathic With The Deceased
of Montreal - Skeletal Lamping
Kylesa - Static Tensions
The Alter Boys - The Exotic Sound of the Alter Boys
Max Tundra - Mastered By Guy At The Exchange
Melt-Banana - Cell-Scape
El Grupo Nuevo - Cryptomnesia

Kylesa is the only one that I'd describe as an impulse buy, the rest I've either heard all/part of, or there are connections to things I already like Why?/cLOUDDEAD, Dog Fashion Disco/The Alter Boys, El Grupo Nuevo/The Mars Volta & Hella.

Any thoughts? What have other people been buying recently?

that's never happened to me, are you going to go back and ask for the disc?

      GalacticStar3ruption @tomatron | 7 May '09, 17:42 | X
      • WELL

i was staying with my girlfriend in glasgow, and i didn't realise until later that day, and then had to fly back to nottingham (where i live) the following morning. so i've left the cd and the receipt at hers in the hope she will sort it out for me.

        HMM.

    GalacticStar3ruption @grouchland | 7 May '09, 18:51 | X
  • Comadre - A Wolf Ticket

as (legally) downloaded from a link on their myspace

    soapy | 7 May '09, 18:40 | X
  • Why are people on here so desperate to show to each other what they're aware of?

Stuff like the weekly Last.fm thread, or this thread. Discussions never seem to come out of them, just dispassionate lists. What's the point?

    lazerlife | 7 May '09, 19:01 | X
    • You are so right.

I bought collections of colonies of bees today cus bon iver told me to.

      meadymeady @lazerlife | 7 May '09, 19:02 | X
    • its weird

I guess you're taking a chance and hoping that someone cares about your taste or the bands you like, no-one ever does though.

      millionaire @lazerlife | 7 May '09, 19:38 | X
      • It was actually

an attempt at a joke. Arf arf. I actually couldn't give a rats ass about what people are listening to or the caring about what I listen to.

        meadymeady @millionaire | 7 May '09, 19:57 | X
        • I replied to lazerlife

    • It makes me look cool

serious answer: I hope that other people will make comments about the albums I'm buying, and trust me it does happen.

      GalacticStar3ruption @lazerlife | 7 May '09, 19:58 | X
    • Things like this have their uses.

Even if discussion is minimal, it doesn't mean people aren't investigating stuff. The Last.fm threads are better than this kind of thing though, I've listened to plenty of stuff I've found in those threads that I'd never have considered listening to before.

      Sibley @lazerlife | 7 May '09, 20:50 | X
      • ^ yep

I wouldn't be buying this Melt-Banana album if it wasn't for the last.fm threads.

        GalacticStar3ruption @Sibley | 7 May '09, 21:15 | X
      • ^yeah pretty much this

i like looking at the lists, especially the last.fm ones as i can see who has a similar taste to me and then see if they have bands / artists on their lists that i don't know.

        shes_so_high @Sibley | 8 May '09, 23:19 | X
  • Not too much

being a penny pinching student, recently in the last month or so
Action Beat - The Noise Band From Bletchley
    Telepathe - Dance Mother
The Earlies - The Enemy Chorus(bought on a whim after hearing on of their secret broadcasts)
    Ringo Deathstarr - Ringo Deathstarr
Shield Your Eyes - Shield Your Eyes

    wewerewerewolvesonce | 7 May '09, 19:06 | X
    • also I heard Kylesa's first album

and it was pretty awesome so I'll have to check out their second.

      wewerewerewolvesonce @wewerewerewolvesonce | 7 May '09, 19:10 | X

    I'm guessing 2.

      Fever Ray - Fever Ray

      because why not eh

      brusma | 7 May '09, 20:04 | X
      • DOESN'T LIKE FEVER RAY?

        your friend is a SPAZMO.

also, i found the school of seven bells album to be a little disappointing :(

(i hope you don't, but i'm just putting it out there because i was super excited about it and... yeah.)

        tomatron @brusma | 7 May '09, 22:30 | X

      Burial / Four Tet
      Pinch

pinch / geiom / spacial are so damn good! burial / four tet is a little shiny but still good.

    • The woman in Kylesa is fit.

      Good band too.

I just got ISIS - Wavering Radiant. Don't expect I'll buy much for a few months now.

      lemonbrickcombo | 7 May '09, 20:53 | X
      • did you buy Diamond Watch Wrists?

Not sure i think much of it. Very similar sounding throughout and there doesn't seem to be much substance to it.

        medulla @lemonbrickcombo | 7 May '09, 21:15 | X
        • haven't got it yet

          lemonbrickcombo @medulla | 7 May '09, 23:27 | X

        doodthatkicksarse @Saint_Cronin | 7 May '09, 22:32 | X
        • One day you will all regret buying so much music.

Having said that, I bought Supporting Caste by Propagandhi which is amazing and includes probably the best thing they've ever done (the opening 3 minutes of 'Last Will and Testament', the remastered version of Architecture and Morality by OMD, and I finally bought Rattlesnakes this week.

          johnwiddop @Saint_Cronin | 7 May '09, 23:49 | X
          • ooh i got that OMD one last week

for £2! i also got the lewis parker album 'masquerades and silhouettes' for £2, which i probably won't listen to, but about 4 years ago i really wanted it and couldn't find it for less then £15 anywhere, so i bought it to help appease my former self.

            tomatron @johnwiddop | 8 May '09, 09:59 | X
          • How you finding Hammock?

I was listening to the title track in my car earlier. They're probably my favourite band at the moment.

            Aereomuffin @Saint_Cronin | 9 May '09, 21:10 | X
          • Today I picked up

St. Vincent "Actor" (based purely on how much everyone's been extremely excited about it)
The Wave Pictures "If You Leave It Alone" (on vinyl. It's definitely that kind of album)
...and the new Television Personalities 7". Exciting times.

          • TC: you didn't go wrong.

That Kylesa album is amazing. Really thick. If it was a soup it would be the chunkiest kind.

          • I find Melt-Banana pretty hit and miss.

Some stuff is excellent (Charlie) but some is utter bobbins (Cactuses Come In Flocks).

Haven't heard of any of the other bands.

            Recent purchases:

Obits - I Blame You (Like a stripped-down version of Hot Snakes, concentrates more on the gritty guitar sound, some fantastic playing. Great to have Froberg back playing music again.)
And So I Watch You From Afar - s/t (epic sounds, crushing heaviness, probably the best album I've heard this year.)
Dananananaykroyd - Hey Everyone! (I've had Pink Sabbath on repeat - I love the way the drums kick in at the start. Apart from that, need to listen to it more.)

          • I'm finding it really tough to buy CDs now.

The ones I want all seem to be released by British indie labels so I need to order them off the web which is a lot of hassle cos I don't have a credit card and I'm sick of asking my parents'.
This problem is made worse by the fact that I can't find a decent record store any where near me. HMV in Limerick is probably the best.

Oh wait, I just remembered I'm going to London on the 29th. I will spend a shitload on CDs then, I'm very sure.
