See? ALL THE TIME!!
i know nothing of the man save for some scott walker covers
The time has probably past but he was another famous Belgian to add to your list that includes, Jean Claude Van Dam.....er.....etc. Came to fame in the mid fifties as a songwriter who later in his career also appeared in many non musical French speaking films. I got into him through Scott Walker who based his entire solo career on admiring Jacques Brel's work. He is a legend who everyone from Dylan to Cohen to Bowie have taken an influence from. My French is non exsitant but my girlfriend is Belgian and gushes about his lyrical dexterity of which some of Scott Walkers translations really capture. If you like early Walker I would take a wander into Brel. Just start at 'Infiniment' and work up. It's all good.
any music in sung in French immediately lures me in
Pales to Brel. He's one of the all time greats and a proper lyrical genius.
(sadly, understanding French is a key part of understanding Brel's appeal)
is unfortunately a long way off for me so Walker's translations help me a lot. I need to learn more French. Nowhere in Brel's songs does he buy a ham bagette or ask the way to the train station.
incredible amsterdam is awesome (there is a good version of David Bowie doing this kicking around the internet) see also la morte!
i heart jacques brel lots
Need to check out a bit more of his stuff........and touch up on my french.
