i dont have any. i want one. which one would you get?
Goo is a good introduction to all sides of the band - though I would say there may be some people on here who'd disagree with that. Daydream Nation is their 'classic' and is the first album of theirs I ever heard, and it immediately made me want to go out and buy everything they'd ever done.
My favourites are Evol and Sister, which are both great as well though. You can't really go wrong with any of the albums from late 80s/early 90s.
Hope that helps a bit.
very good summary. pretty much did the same thing. star with the classics and then diverse.
not 'NYC ghosts and flowers'
not 'Bad moon rising'
All the other ones.
YEah, that doesn't help much. Dirty, Daydream Nation and Washing Machine are essential. Narrow it down any more than that and I'd explode.
i love Sister, EVOL, Washing Machine, Murray Street and A Thousand Leaves just as much, but they might not be great starting places.
maybe start from the end and work your way back, skipping out NYC Ghost & Flowers
because daydream nation is a bit too big for a starter probably.
whereas Goo has poppy bits without being a bit rubbish like some of is Dirty. its the perfect combination.
just skip My Friend Goo yeah?
Goo all the way :)
About a month after I first heard them I'd already bought almost all their albums and still find it really hard to narrow down the best. Says a lot really.
You can get quite a few for a fiver each in Fopp, I guess that might help.
one at a time pls.
everyone i've ever known that's into sonic youth cannot agree on what album is their favorite. literally, if you took 10 sonic youth fans and asked them this, you will undoubtedly get 10 different answers. see above.
that being said; i like everything up to (and including) dirty.
ok. if i get dirty and i dont like it, i'm gonna blame you
They're the best ones and most accessible.
Sonic Youth have got to be the most consistently incredible band I can think of - such a long career and such an incredible amount of great music. For sheer longevity, consistency and above all marvellous songwriting, I can't think of a band who beat them...
confusion is sex, evol, sister
but don't get confusion is sex
Also, how many times have threads been posted about sy now? They must be the most talked about band on here.
these are my top three
walk into your local record store and pick whichever one of their albums catches your eye or is on a good deal.
You can't really go wrong with any of their albums, and discovering one for yourself with no expectation of it is the best way to get into them.
I dunno if i made sense there.
I tend to pick them up when I see them cheap in stores. The same with Bowie albums.
