Primal Scream's Screamadelica is super highly regarded, but before that they had more of a distortion/feed-back rock kinda sound (a la Mary Chain)... kinda.
more harder rock? Not that I've ever listened to it, I admit. I find them most interesting when they're on their neo-industrial kick. Evil Heat is my pick, but XTRMNTR is also very special.
Screamadelica and Vanishing Point are also pretty good, but I don't love those albums through and through like I do the above.
Burning Wheel, Higher Than The Sun, Kowalski, Rocks, Shoot Speed/Kill Light, Swastika Eyes, Damaged, Autobahn 66, Movin' On Up.... there's ten outstanding tracks of the top of my head.
Ok, so they've been gash of late, but that doesn't negate the above or allow you to spout utter nonsense.
The guy asked for help with a band name, got the band name and doesn't need you to patronise him about what he should and shouldn't listen to.
Also, what does it matter if the band are arseholes?
I've already heard Radiohead, obviously. I have Nite Versions by Soulwax, and the first eight "As Heard on Radio Soulwax". I also have "Attack Sustain Delay Release" or whatever the order is by SMD. I have some Slowdive, but it's Souvlaki, which doesn't seem to be what they're discussing. I fucking love The Knife (and Fever Ray). What should I listen to?
Otherwise, Seefeel are amazing. And KLF are really great - I don't dig much dance and techno, but they're really fun. Loads of great stories about them as well, Bill Drummond is a real character.
sort of matches this description, started off as a loud rock band and changed to an electronic postal service type band. But I don't think this is who you mean...

The Shamen - Pro-Gen
?
Or, PWEI?
This is the day, this is the hour, this is this.
soup dragons?
Oh, "super highly regarded". Scratch that, then.
seriously, though, you're describing Primal Scream
even if that's not the one you're thinking of.
Primal Scream's Screamadelica is super highly regarded, but before that they had more of a distortion/feed-back rock kinda sound (a la Mary Chain)... kinda.
I came by to say
Primal Scream too
They, er, didn't sound like that at all
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d8KynrRA1u8
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ngnPIHS1rpg
^ they sounded like a knock off Rolling Stones
they actually went on to get more feedbacky, this is a pretty ok track:

I'd always thought that their second album was less byrds-y jangle pop

Yes! Primal Scream!!! Thank you!
I'm so disappointed
all the great bands mentioned in this thread, and you choose Bobby cocking Gillespie and his bunch of tossers. I'm losing faith in Americans.
I didn't pick one over the other, they were the band I was trying to remember. I've never heard Screamadelica but I've been meaning too.
...
listen to some of the other bands first!
Primal Scream have done some ok tracks, but they're all massive wankers, and half of their output is meat and potatoes lagered up festival rock.
"some ok tracks"
Burning Wheel, Higher Than The Sun, Kowalski, Rocks, Shoot Speed/Kill Light, Swastika Eyes, Damaged, Autobahn 66, Movin' On Up.... there's ten outstanding tracks of the top of my head.

Sorry, that really got my goat.
I wasn't patronising him, so apologies if it came out like that
I just found it funny that all these great bands and gems got mentioned like PWEI, Seefeel and KLF and it ends up being Primal Scream!
I stick with my assessment of them, after all it is MY assessment.
Which YOU are more than entitled to.
My assessment is that they are as important as KLF, more so than PWEI, and I don't know Seefeel so shall investigate.
Cheers for the Six Finger Satellite tip also.
more important than PWEI?
Opinion and all that relates to quality, but there's no way in hell Primal Scream are as influential as PWEI.
Still great, but not as important.
Which ones should I listen to.

If what the dude above says is true, I apologise for coming across patronising
Check out Six Finger Satellite, obviously!

Definitely Pop Will Eat Itself
get This Is the Day... or, if you'd rather a sampler, the BMG Best of.
Also definitely have a peak at The KLF. What Time Is Love? and 3AM Eternal are legen -- wait for it! -- DERRY!
Six Finger Satellite?
They went on to become the Juan Mclean.
Honey is Cool
karin went on to be half of The Knife
Seefeel?
Slightly-ish matches the description. Went on to make CH-VOX (which is ambient techno). It also has a very dubsteppy-sounding song (from 1996!)
And yeah
'Net' from that album is v.v highly regarded
is it Soulwax --> Radio Soulwax/2 Many DJs/Nite Versions?
or Simian --> Simian Mobile Disco
?
that's about a decade too late though surely
I was quite surprised
when I found out SMD had lacquered that turd of a single that nobody cared about the first time around
i'm wondering if you mean KLF. You might not be though.
or something obvious like Kid A.
The Notwist
sort of matches this description, started off as a loud rock band and changed to an electronic postal service type band. But I don't think this is who you mean...
Out on a limb but..
Therapy? Nurse. They were heavily influenced by techno on their first 3 albums before they went all power-pop.
The band might be Slowdive
and the album Pygmalion?
radiohead?
Young Gods - TV Sky
Maybe?
