The world's biggest pub rock band.
dispite hearing a billion songs by them over the years, they just appear to be a bit shit to me haha
complete toss. I don't understand it at all.
but in their prime they were the greatest band on earth. exile on main street, let it bleed, beggars banquet - class, class records
that goes 'I shouted out who killed the Kennedys, when after all it was you and me' ... or something. Paint it Black too. It does anger me that you can fill any soundtrack with their tosh and it's labelled amazing (see The Boat That Rocked)
genuinely confuse and scare me.
argued that queen were better than the beatles
people always bring in The Beatles huge cultural impact as if that makes them better by default.
I love the beatles, but would take the stones over them
I'm not interested in 'cultural impact'; The Beatles had more ideas, wrote better melodies, pushed the boundaries more, and just had a larger number of absolutely 10/10 songs. The only conceivable reason I can think of for preferring the stones is that they were a bit heavier and more direct: but the passage of time has removed that advantage too, they sound positively wimpy and un-rock compared to a lot of subsequent bands.
but I know yours isn't in the complimentary sense: so I take issue. Everything they did up to and before Some Girls = greatness. They wrote Paint It Black and Gimme Shelter so it's practically self-explanatory.
of why I almost never read a music thread by Brainlove.
See you again in 2010 JB.
are "utter shit" you have to worry about their sanity.
If the Stones are "utter shit" then what about bands like the Stereophonics et al....???
there are different levels of shit. The Stones are probably mach level 2 shit, whereas The Stereophonics are completely off the scale.
They're still so much better than The Beatles.
I wouldn't want to see them these days, nor would I buy anything they released after the 70s, but you can't deny they were a real primal force in their day.
The reason they are labelled as pub rock is because so many have aped them in all kinds of terrible ways. I don't even think pub rock is the right word. They're a bar band, if anything. Kept it simple, knew their way around a groove etc etc.
pub rock = bar band = the rolling stones. although if i was going to listen to a bar band it would probably be them.
a bar and a pub are different things.
and there is also a genre called Pub Rock
they wrote some amazing songs and looked like an incredible live band in the 60s and 70s.
You smoking Crack as well?
I haven't been able to stop listening to I'm On Fire for about two days. The man's a genius.
I love his cover of Dream Baby Dream as well
eight of 'Rocks Off' on Exile ('Feel so hypnotized...'), it's just so menacing. That album is one of my favourites EVER!
Tom Waits owes everything he's done since about '83 to 'Ventilator Blues'.
The outro of 'Tumbling Dice' makes me cry.
Exile aside, the opening bars of 'Gimme Shelter' send shivers through me. The backing singing is also great on that, especially when her voice cracks. It's a very simple song, but I can't think of another so brooding or (and I'll use that word again!) menacing.
'Jumpin' Jack Flash' still makes me want to kill people.
'Under My Thumb' is the best break-up song ever. How can you listen to that and not man up?! 'Ain't it the TRUTH, babe?'
They just fucking ROCKED. I like the Mick Taylor years most; I think that combination was the best in terms of guitar styles. But their 60's singles were amazing. They sound so dirty and dangerous. I wish they hadn't got sidetracked with the psychedelia stuff, 'cos it wasn't bad, but it wasn't their forte.
They're responsible for so many of my favourite moments in music, and they influenced most of my favourite bands. But apart from that, yeah, what a load of shit, ey?
You may not like what they are now or dig an entire album but they have so many good songs.
File this thread in the "classic artist/album is overrated" section, if there's any space left.

Play a record.
...but I wouldn't call them utter "s**t" or neglect to recognise their influence. I'm just too young to feel that there is anything remotely cool about them as rock & roll icons and their music just seem really dated to me. I don't tend to listen to much rock and roll from the 60s and 70s (and yes that includes stuff like Led Zep too, shock horror!). It's more soul and mo-town which gets me from that era. The guitar strumming heroes seem really generic now and the music too, if I'm honest.
Still, I wouldn't dismiss them. They had a very important role to play and I'm pretty sure they were the edgyist thing around in their day. Like I've said before, you don't have to personally like something to nevertheless respect it.
