especially 'heavy water'. Incredibly beautiful stuff.
Can anyone recommend me stuff of similar beauty?
i told her this a few months ago and she was all like "omg i'm going to new york soon and we're hopefully gonna do some stuff together!"
i don't know what became of her trip, i should ask.
to nail stuff that sounds very similar, 'cause she's got a fairly singular aesthetic, but it cdn't do any harm to check...
(sonically, perhaps closer to Scout Niblett, but there's something about how inconclusive the songs are that reminds me of Grouper)
(way noisier, but pushing the same kind of suffocated-in-plastic production)
and I always think the touchstone for this kind of band shd be...
His Name Is Alive
(one of 4AD's least-appreciated bands, still going, too - though they've been through lots and lots of changes of style and it's the first few albums that wd be the closest comparison)
is it too obvious to say (some) Xiu Xiu?
but someone recommended me Benoit Pioulard as something similar. Download 'Temper' from emusic, it is aaace.
But his first album, Precis, is even better. I always think of benoit Pioulard and grouper as being a bit simillar. Also, probably best to get Grouper's other albums, as well as the stuff she did with xiu xiu. Its all pretty damn good.
I remember this thread which might interest you. http://www.drownedinsound.com/community/boards/music/4154232
Some of her stuff anyway.
Her album on Not Not Fun is really good and she did a split with Grouper.
Sally Strobelight is pretty similar too.
By to kill a petty bourgeoisie is great, and of a vaguely similar style. Came out on kranky a couple of years ago.
wow thank you for enlightening me. i love listening to it whilst going on a night walk.
album Omns is staggeringly beautiful and eerie, and highly recommended if you like Dragging a Dead Deer...
Natural Snow buildings, and perhaps their two side projects: Isengrind and Twinsistermoon. Actually just try to get hold of the album The Snowbringer Cult, because that has all three
Matteah Baim - Death of the Sun
Charalambides - in particular Joy Shapes, though I don't have enough of their stuff to know if there is something more suitable
Christina Carter - I'm still yet to actually get any of her releases
Fursaxa- apparently her self titled on Ecstatic Peace! is amazing, but I don't know where to get hold of it (legally)
Pocahaunted and Orphan Fairytale maybe? They're a bit different though, but still highly recommended.
really beautiful stuff:
Former Ghosts - little more xiu xiu-y. dude from This Song Is A Mess And So Am I and apparently Jamie Stewart is now part of it too, which makes me super stoked:
Elbows Like Swords: from Edinburgh. he is good yep:
