they really haven't ever made a bad album have they?
The new one is sounding really good right now. Really good.
although like herod sometimes scares me.
I like the way that they always pull out three or four absolutely solid gold tracks on every album and then a couple more which I become quietly obsessed with like Thank You Space Expert, which is just completely beautiful. They're just so much subtler than 90% or instrumental rock bands.
They don't overcomplicate or underwrite their tracks.
Agree about the songs you miss first time round. Last time it was Autorock, this time it's Thank You Space Expert.
is up there in the best five tracks they've ever released, I'm pretty sure.
like the bass harmonic a few mins into Space Expert which just makes my heart melt. I still don't think they'll ever touch Helicon 1 Ex-Cowboy but just infinitely more interesting than most of the current post-rock crowd.
And yeah, I Love You - Scotland's Shame - Space Expert is certainly up there with the best run of consecutive tracks on any of their records.
didn't really enjoy it on first listen and it never grew on me after that. I don't have all their albums but CODY, Rock Action and Happy Songs are all at the very least, consistent efforts.
And yeah, I don't have Young Team yet, so shoot me.
wasnt massively fussed after a couple of listens but its really grown on me and is now either my favourite or second favourite Mogwai record.
I love them but still dont understand all the fuss over 'Young Team'. Yes, theres possibly 3 great trakcs on there, but as an album as a whole it doesnt work and theres too much filler.
Ok where's my gun? I WILL shoot you.
Get the album. Listen to the album. Then listen to Mogwai Fear Satan again.
Oh my God.
i dont think they even get enough credit for it.
oh look, i just said consistently shit
not heard the newest though.
until I actually hear them and they do have some kind of magical quality
reasonably consistent...but one time I saw them at a festival and it was like heavy Coldplay. This was in 07. Definitely not up to CODY proportions.
but I don't think they have evr really made a classic album CODY is close, but otherwise they tend to be four awesome songs and some average ones. Consistent yes, but I kindof like that I still think they have a classic album in them to release.
But I love every Mogwai album I do have, Mr. Beast wasn't a bit weak in comparison to the rest, but I still appreciate it.
THIH is on spotify! Will finally give it a listen now.
Same old stuff every album. Quiet bit loud bit quiet bit. Let's mix it up a bit, these two are all loud and all quiet respectively.
But they have some quality which makes them infinitely listenable. And extremely, extremely good when drunk. Thank You Space Expert, Daphne and the Brain and the Precipice, you listen to them sometimes and catch yourself thinking "actually, why does anyone ever make any other kind of music?"
I'm Jim Morrison, I'm Dead is a barely rehashed I Know You Are So What Am I though. Way to waste a great title.
but there are some moments of subtle magic, plus I love the sheer ferocity of 'Batcat' and the growing menance of 'Scotlands Shame'.
but from the posts on this thread i feel like i really should. they have one of the most amazing back catalogues though, any band would be envious of it
"they really haven't ever made a bad album have they?"
No! Granted some songs are better than others but they've put out consistently good work for over 10 years now. More than you can say for most top popular acts nowadays, that seem to peak at their debut album and then it all goes downhill. I can think of... oh, so many in the last decade alone.
They truly shine on their own in the instrumental rock territory. Any other for that matter!
The whole Pitchfork review annoyed me somewhat, but it's brilliant. My favourite song is The Precipice, which is solid gold. Also has anyone heard Dracula Family, It's a bonus track on Japanese version, It's brilliant.
and the tracks that are good are REALLY GOOD (Yes! I Am A Long Way From Home/Like Herod/Mogwai Fear Satan) and the rest just seem too... drawn out... and without payback for me to really get into...
The exception being A Cheery Wave From Stranded Youngsters, which isn't particularly spectacular, but I like it because to me at least it sounds like the kind of thing Oneida would come out with if they were Scottish and writing songs on a Bucky hangover...
If you people had to recommend me one Mogwai album to raise my opinion of the band beyond a solid 7/10, what would it be?
solid gold, from start to finish
And they've made a hatful of awesome ones.
The problem is they wrote 'Mogwai Fear Satan' and 'Like Herod' ten years ago on their first album and nothing they've done has been anywhere near as good.
Don't get me wrong, I love them, I think they've made some excellent records, but they've never recaptured the magic of those three notes played on the flute.
