Has anyone heard it?
Genuinely the worst album of 2009 so far.
I predict it will get 8/10 here.
There was one song that I found to be quite good, or at least not-that-boring, but when I went back to listen to it again, I couldn't hear it so it was either a completely different song or I fantasised the entire thing. That single, "Help I'm Alive", is a flaming dirge - worst single choice ever. What happened to you, Emily? :(
similar thing to what i was thinking. it's not like it's even going to grow on me. if the songs are structured in an interesting way only some amazing chord equences could save it and it has neither. I really like metric as well, very average 6/10 at most.
and yes, it is.
heard a cracking remix of monster hospital once, but that's the closest i've gotten to liking them, they've always sounded painfully average at heart. will always have a soft spot for them but almost entirely due to haines singing on 'anthems...'
Couple of good singles but nothing too fantastic. Quite fun live though.
it trough a few times. Awful. The second single "Gimme Sympathy" is just embarrassing. I really like the singers voice and they've had some great bits before but it seems like their songwriting's gone worse and worse. I'ts like they construct the songs out of these "cool sounding" blocks and then paste them together. Also, the lyrics are reeeally horrible at times.
I really like Metric - they're never a great band, but I love Emily Haines in a strictly platonic way. But the album is a bit bland and unmemorable. I can't put my finger on what is wrong particularly, but their strong point was her personality, which seems lacking here. There are songs on it I like a lot: Help I'm Alive, which really grew on me (perhaps in a Stockholm Syndrome way), Blindness and Stadium Love, but it certainly is disappointing for a four year wait.
have any of you heard lisa lobsinger's band? http://www.myspace.com/reveriesoundrevue
i was never that convinced by her in BSS - not enough power in her voice for most of their material, but for this music she's just perfect. really good songs.
It's trying a bit hard to be anthemic throughout and the second half is weak at time but Help I'm Alive and Guns Gold Guns are both great tracks. it's a solid 6 or 7 out of 10 imo.
but it's certainly not great. I had high hopes after Live It Out and Emily's solo that they'd pull something special out of the bag for this one. Unfortunately, they just seem to have copped out and written a bunch of verse chorus verse nothing indie tunes. I love Help I'm Alive and track 4, it's a dark and interesting tune. Everything else is a bit meh. I'm sad about this.
