i'm going to buy some CDs - maybe you can help?
hello there folks
i've got a little bit of cashmoney that i plan to spend on some circular discs, but i feel like you people out there could open me up to a few new artists that i might like to invest in.
this is the sort of thing i'm looking for: cool (of attitude/demeanor), grubby, wild-eyed, skronky, groovy, dramatic, sexualized, spectacular, ridiculously well played, compositionally bizarre, burning with a religious fervour, soul power aplenty, maybe a bit ethnic, maybe some synths in there, maybe a bit jazzed out, well produced, maybe extravagantly orchestrated, maybe some variant of techno. No soul searching indie turd.
So far on the list is Zombi, Zomby, Dungen, The United States of America
here's a playlist you can add things to:

or you could link me to a last.fm page etc.

i want
dark jazz & crime jazz, experimental piano music, bitchin rhythm sections with slap bass/fuzz bass, martial drumming, 70s spaceprog, psych soul
Did you get my CD, douchebag?
I kept meaning to sent you a message about the one you sent me. Good it was. I particularly enjoyed Monks, John Zorn, John Maus and Bark Psychosis
yeah man!
glad you enjoyed it, some great tracks on there if i don't say so myself. Your disc is pretty brilliant as well, i'm loving the songs by Broughton & Casati, Tobacco and Pink Reason
Good stuff
Glad to hear it.
I'm just listening to it through again, that David Axelrod song is huge.
i love Axelrod
that track in particular is extremely badass
i really recommend david thomas broughton's solo stuff
if you like his songs with casati. even though it pretty much entirely goes against everything you described in the opening post.
he's got a beautiful voice, for sure
i did hear The Complete Guide to Insufficency once and was very impressed
its my favourite record ever made.
and i'm not saying that in a hyperbolic way. search his name on this forum and you'll probably find dozens of posts of mine saying the same thing.
also his record's on spotify but hearing ads would totally spoil it i reckon.
any relation
to edgar?
Thats some terrible grammar, right there-
"I kept meaning to sent you a message about the one you sent me."
check it out douchebag

So anyways, that's a little of what I was up to. I'll tell ya, one LP what got alot've play while I was gone was the debut by Whose Yor Favorite Son, God? & man is it a keeper! See'em live down to SXSW was great, but the record fans the flames of hybridized (post)Prog-swoggle & (proto) Metal-mania like just about nobody else. What w/this talk about brain transplants 'n all, WYFSG? could almost be described as a union of Magma (mind) & MX-80 Sound (matter). I don't know about you, but I was jonesin to hear somethin SCREAMIN after 'Crowd Conrol' (to no avail) & hey, if Christian Zander had kidnapped Rich Stim & Bruce Anderson, perhaps 'Attahk' might've sounded as rad as this album. WYFSG? ably combine the dramatic & operatic pretense of Magma w/the cool, aggressive delivery of MX-80 Sound & if your thinkin 'that's somethin I gotta hear' your right. My Mom (remember her?) says they sound like Mahavishnu Orchestra should've if they were MEN (once you hear this you'll know what she means). Even the little Greek dude who delivers my beer opined "everything that Heavy The World isn't, Whose Your Favorite Son, God? IS". And who am I to argue w/a Greek? They invented civilization buster! What have you ever done?
this is pretty cool
i'm not sure about the guy's voice though, he sounds like a bit of a weiner. They'd be a great instrumental band
hey mug
what's a good Ruins record to get? I've got Vrresto but i'm not too keen, the shitty clean production wrecks it for me. Heard some of their other grimier tracks and they sounded amazink. Any thoughts?
I haven't heard that one
but does it sound like the one on Ipecac? "Tzomborgha". That one sounds weeeeeak. Plus one of the songs is exactly like Primus. I really like Pallaschtom, but the recording ain't exactly grimy like Lightning Bolt or owt. It sounds good though. Nothing like that piddly Tzomborgha album
http://www.myspace.com/ruinsband the 'hard rock' song on there is the bonus track on Pallaschtom and the rest of the album sounds like that. Except the tunes are more exciting
o rly?
i love the Mahavishnu medley on that record, haven't heard any of the other stuff though. I was swaying towards the live record Mandala 2000 - allmusic says it's pretty good, and it's gotta be fairly grimey if it's a live album right?
I would think so
unless he added a bit of studio spice afterwards. Ruins: Live At Budokan
Yeah
he is a bit er, buried in the mix on the bestest tracks. But it grew on me
Watersports by Mi Ami
seems to fit quite a lot of your criteria, and it's really good.
http://www.myspace.com/miamiamiami
I downloaded this off emusic this week.
Really didn't like it on first listen. I found his voice incredibly annoying. Maybe it'll grow on me.
hmm
i might have to sway towards colesy's assessment on this one. Ok, but not quite there
that Zombi record's good but it isn't as good as it should be
Sleepytime Gorilla Museum? http://www.last.fm/music/Sleepytime+Gorilla+Museum
Cecil Taylor pianowise http://www.last.fm/music/Cecil+Taylor
new Maudlin Of The Well shortly. yum.
SGM has potential
some nice dark moods getting conjured up
Cecil is maybe a bit too jazz in terms of what i'm looking for.. i was thinking experimental piano with a more classical lilt
Zu - Carboniferous
should fulfil most of your requirements aptly.
Definitely
That's another of this week's emusic downloads. I've been playing it to death for the last week or so
now this is something i can get my teeth into
is Carboniferous their best? Anyone heard any of the others?
I gots 'the way of the animal powers'
it's mint. More creepy and groovy though, here is the first track with the good title
http://www.last.fm/music/Zu/_/tom+araya+is+our+elvis
The one they did with free jazz dude Mats Gustafsson is good
I think Carboniferous is fucking great though, mixes immediacy w/brute tech.
Igneo is a decent album too. They have 14 albums, so a nice back catalogue for you to explore.
there's loads of Mats Gustafsson on spotify the noo
All the stuff on Smalltown Superjazz. Including that piece of poo Mats Gustafsson / Yoshimi cd I bought thinking it would be good. Apols if I sold that to anyone on here
The Thing are on though. They are unschtoppable
Are you going for Zomby's Hyperdub EP?
The mad fucked up aquatic crunk baseline grime hybrid... Thats my fave stuff of his.
There is no-one really like him at the moment but if you want some more slightly unhinged stuff Starkey might do it for you, his album Ephemeral Exhibits on Planet Mu is a beast.
http://www.myspace.com/starkey
i was gonna go for Where Were U In 92?
is the EP where it's at then?
Also, Ephemeral Exhibits was on my maybe pile (saw you mention it before). I'll give it a listen in a bit
Where Were U in '92
is pretty damn good but its like old skool thorwback ravey stuff but with a slight up to date edge. I still haven't heard it all yet mind, but the Hyperdub EP is something special. Its just insane and there really isn't anything around like it. Saying that though it's not out on CD hahah I think it's only vynal and mp3's I think. Maybe hold out for the epic Hyperdub compilation thats on its way this year for some of that and more mind.
maybe i'll just nick the EP then
hold out for this comp. I remember you linked me to some stuff of the EP before, that's what i want.
Any other ideas for records of that ilk?
nowt quite like zomby but...
some of the wonky style hip-hop has simular strange synths going on. Samiyam comes to mind...
http://www.myspace.com/samiyambeats
Rap Beats Vol.1 is an ace album plus you get homemade pornogrphic artwork with it.
condo fucks - fuckbook
I think someone has got to your playlist
Killing for religion! Something I don't understand!
Douchebag I added this Neil Diamond song
I would like to know if you think it's the best song ever written, or the worst one. I can't decide. On one hand it's like an awesome rewrite of 'My Way', on the other hand it's like one of those pisstake songs from South Park
one one level, yes. It's the best song ever written
on another, much more prominent level, it's the cheesiest piece of motherfuckery i've ever heard. Hell yeah, it is
I'm going to get it played at my funeral
It's going to be epic
this valerio cosi thing on spotify is awesome
ik they have all the Digitalis stuff on there now
even vxpxc is on there
awesome
Own up, who added the Santana?
Try
Emeralds - my housemate says they sound like Tangerine Dream. I've never heard Tangerine Dream.
Nadja - droney doom with slightly warm, furry edges.
Magic Lantern - Ear battering pysch.
If you're a Kyuss fan, get hold of some of the stuff on this spanish label called Alone Records:
http://www.the-stone-circle.com/aloneweb/html/01newseng.html
Moho from there are pretty nice. Fat bass sound.
http://www.myspace.com/moho666
Also recommend from the Alone roster this pysch band, if you can stomach the fucking bizarro vocals. FEAT GREG GINN!!
www.myspace.com/theperfectrat
I also have found myself really liking Fennesz's Endless Summer LP- added a track to your playlist, along with a Nadja one.
Oh, also see if you can find anything by this band called Orthodox.
It's nice. I like stoner rock.
tangerine dream aer real good
hmmm, that Nadja track is verr good
hey lbc, do you like Fu Manchu? They're always talked about in the same breath as Kyuss, and i'm looking for some more groovy stoner rock
They're pretty good
I just end up listening to Kyuss after a bit though, cause nothing comes close to hearing John Garcia talk about Makin' lurrve as Homme fellates his guitar.
That said, the two I have are pretty good. No-One Rides for Free and The Action Is Go. The latter features this, which is pretty stonkin' http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fxrTUCo6hbo&feature=related
try some eyehategod or weedeater
the greatest stoner guitar tones known to man. fu manchu are wrong uns.
i just added baby huey and the babysitters
you surely know at least one of the songs from incessant sampling anyway but hey
the change gonna come cover is the only decent cover of that song ever
yessh
this is really good stuff. I'm gonna get some Shuggie Otis as well
There's a ton of Helmet on spotify
You'd dig that. I do.
Listen to Betty, and Meantime, album wise.
uh huh
this is rad
literally discovered them yesterday
anyway, happy hunting. night all
just added some stuff to your spotify playlist
enjoy? just enjoying being 14 again with mustaine's manliness. 'No more Mr nice guy', nearly as good as 'Train Of Consequences'.
in terms of dark jazz/crime jazz
I'd recommend Bohren & der Club of Gore's Dolores. which comes across as a slow motion interpretation of a grim film noir soundtrack with some strikingly beautiful ambient movements.
Just added the BLK JKS EP
It's really good, and ticks a lot of the boxes you wanted. Check it out.
Flying Lotus, Hudson Mohawke, Harmonic 313, Chris Clark (Warp-tastic!)
