Actually just went and made a song I really love!
That was my response too. Rumour suggests the rest of it's up to that sort of level, too... Pretty exciting.
It's pretty derivative, but surprisingly enjoyable as a whole.
its really great, like 8 minutes of really engaging stuff.
but....are they jumping on a krautrock bandwagon?
to fuck if you ask me, pretty nice though. Can't see it doing well on the mainstream mind, as a single or whatever.
prefer the first half to second but it's still really great overall, miles better than anything they've done before.
a moment towards the end after it breaks down .......about 15 seconds of a bass sound that has been done to death in the last few years.....but then it picks up and the synth comes along to save the day
but anyway...it's good and i can't stop listening.....album produced by geoff barrow apparantly...should be interesting
but it just sounds like something that's been played a million times before if you know what bit i'm going on about....
nobody could have hated this band more than i after the abominable winkle-picked mockery of my ears that was their first album. In all seriousness, i wanted to grab them by their collective backcomb, polkadots flailing past the pointing, laughing everyday chav folk of southend, march them to the nearest speaker, strap them down and make them listen to the shit that they had just wasted the previous hour of my life with.
but this... well, its a bit good, isn't it? reminds me of tago mago era CAN. And how the fuck do you make Krautrock that doesn't sound derivative? That's like asking for a jar of Marmite that doesn't taste of shit.
i feel ashamed to say that i now like the horrors.
has any band pulled such a swift u-turn in the history of the cochlea? going from universally loathing to credible acclaim in the space of one song?
(and no, i'm not denoting my opinion as credible. well i am, but thats another thread entirely.)
this is... good. woah
"I was like wtf I well hate this band, I can't work out if it's good but... I can't stop listening to it." I think there's something subliminal going on here. Fuck you Horrors. Still, nice to get a free download out of it.
where'd you get that then?
and yeah I really liked it I'm quite interested to see what the rest of the album will sound like now.
but then I quite liked some of their old stuff too.
The second half is oddly gorgeous, and Faris' voice sounds great when he's really singing. It's exactly the kind of thing I wanted them to make. I'm really excited for the album.
Do you have a problem?
basically because it sounds a lot like stuff I normally listen to- although I do think it sounds pretty derivative of Neu! and Can and their ilk - I can't escape the feeling that it's a bit of a krautrock pastiche, in a similar way to how they were garage rock pastiche before.
It's a lot better than that old shit was, mind.
so it doesn't seem like that massive a suprise that they'd make a fucking awesome derivative record!
it's blowing me away.
I hope the rest of the album is this good, and it might even get as many plays as the new YYYs one.
the more minimal side of them anyway.
Very good. They look great too. Dressing a bit more subtly than the stupidly skinniness.
Good to see the one with the big hair has let it down and looks cool now.
and he looks like one of the stone roses. i'm wronog.
I like this, a lot.
if they work on their live show they could turn out to be a really great band. best just write off the debut as their 'pablo honey'.
motorik will rule the world
Does noone else just think it sounds like a band who 5/6 years ago would have been written off as Joy Division / New Order obsessives who need to buy some more records?
And that synth bit at the end just ruins everything it was building up to.
It's good to see some change and I'm always delighted to hear some krautrock influences but, like their first album, it's just a reference to things rather than any of their own ideas. I always kinda thought they'd end up being a good band but, yeah, maybe not...
It's restrained. It's cool. I like it. And as people discussed above, The Horrors really aren't a band who need to by some more records. There's plenty more influences in this song than the lazy Joy Division comparison you just made.
real Wooden Shjipsy
it sounds a bit like the wire song "two people in a room" the rythym does anyway
in lineup - the old bass player now plays synth, while the organist plays bass.
i think that may have a telling difference on their style coz ''coffin joe'' - the ex bassist (i think thats his name) and ''tomethy furse'' - the guitarist had quite an avant electro side project (spider and the flies??) hence the synth ending. but maybe ''spider webb's'' inexperience on bass may give the motorik groove/feel
Spider and the Flies is the side project of the bass player and the organist, so i guess the electronic influence is down to them. saying that i've heard Faris dj a number of times over the last year and he plays a lot of electronic stuff too.
and tom seems to be well into synths and electro like in spider and the flies, and also he seems to play lots of harsh electro type stuff when he djs, and faris has a lot of electro and no wave
they were talking about how much they loved Add (N) to (X), Throbbing Gristle, Aphex Twin and lots of stuff like that. So it's fairly clear. I really like the song as it happens.
Like - the structure of it, starts of kinds of depressing but builds into something strangely uplifting. All the breakdown bits are fantastic.
Dislikes - some bits of it are sort of drab. don't like the vocals. sorta preferred them when they had a sense of humour.
i now think it's shite
this was a swift backlash
i'll listen to other songs by them if this is their new direction but this song bores me.
...I've listened to it a few times now and it's interesting stuff. I didn't hate their first album though - I wasn't in awe of it either. People keep raving about their new stuff but I can't find any of it one line yet, and I want to give it a listen. Are there any links?
