God they're bad. Honestly, if I wanted to sit around crying to shitty music all day I could do it myself, fuckers.
and what specific pretence to you think they are guilty of?
As opposed to weird attention seeking thread-starters like this.
I'm repeating myself, but Charlie Brooker is funny. And Screenwipe is rather excellent too.
That must be weird
...The Smiths deliver very dark lyrics, often to a very catchy melody. Much of the time, it's almost like they're winking at us and saying, "life's shit, so let's fuck it and dance". In contrast, Joy Division, The Cure and so on, were just saying, "life's shit". That's why I prefer the those other bands - The Smiths just aren't gloomy enough for me.
Apart from How Soon Is Now? and This Charming Man.
is 'Pretentious Near Unlistenable Bullshit'
smiths are good. and people who like them tend not to cry to them while listening, from my own experince and that of almost every person i know who likes them would feel good while listening to em.
wanna cry try jarboe .
I quite like The Smiths.
My Dad on the other hand, did not like them...
Maybe it's a generational thing?
although you would be missing out quite a lot.
if you cannot grasp the humour of Morrissey's lyrics. Your loss.
Was Invented To Describe The Threads Of Late, Wasn't It?
they're musically fairly dull, some catchy tunes, the lyrics make it, but once you start listening and reading more interesting stuff, you get over how good the lyrics seemed
one of the most absurd threads this forum has ever produced...
rabid, pig ignorant and stultifyingly ill informed
thank for this
You silly person.
mistaking The Smiths for a purposively 'sad' or depressing band is the biggest indie-schmindie faux pas you can make. That or getting the Suede album mixed up with Keanu Reeves' old band, as recently seen on these boards..
And The Smith's are fucking amazing.
end of discussion.
listening to The Smiths you're not really getting it.
I love The Smiths.
Anyway the Smiths have always seemed distinctly average to me. But they seem to have inspired a lot of awesome bands, so clearly people saw something there that I missed.
bullshit - personal opinion i suppose.
near unlistenable - totally false. it's not exactly Whitehouse or Wolf Eyes.
Also, "if I wanted to sit around crying to shitty music all day I could do it myself, fuckers" is confusing. implies you have unwanted company whenever The Smiths comes on.
are these unwanted guests perhaps trying to help him to cry in some way? by playing shitty music?
on reflection rather than simply blaming the smiths I would recommend either moving house, or burning your current house to the ground. Either way, the next time these awful people turn up (possibly bearing onions and smiths LPs) they'll be confused and frightened
