Am I alone?
They're a bit of a sacred cow.
....but fully understand why other people don 't. try 'early' or 'white bread black beer' - if that don't float your boat its gonna be very difficult to get into the more commercial/major label stuff as theres the whole 80's production values to try to get over never mind the vocals pitched somewhere about a foot higher than a man with a great big dark beard could expect to sing.
Do you hate the scratchy DIY post-punk/skank that's compiled on 'Early'? or the crystaline pop perfection of 'Songs to Learn and Sing'? or the high-gloss mainstream white soul of their major label years? or the perfectly tooled classic songwriting of 'White Bread/Black Beer'?
Or have you just heard one song somewhere and not liked it very much?
I was preparing a case, but you've done it for me. Green Garside is a genuine musical chameleon (with a real mixed bag of successes and failures to his credit/debit).
But Early and Songs To Remember are unarguably brilliant, and some of the mid-80's singles (Wood Beez, Absolute etc...) are as good as anything in that genre.
White Bread/Black Beer very decent stuff too
