The World of David Bowie
on Deram.
Then cut to the chase with any of Anthony Newley's LPs.
-
Low, Ziggy Stardust, Diamond Dogs
The Man Who Sold The World, Hunky Dory are my all time faves.
-
Low
and Hunky Dory, but mainly Low
-
How could i have forgotten Low!
maybe a bit heavy if you are just getting into his stuff tho.
-
station to station
or low/heroes.
-
hunky dory
is my favourite. then low.
-
Station To Station,
Low and Heroes.
Then go for Scary Monsters and Lodger.
-
Hunky Dory, purely for 'Quicksand'
and yeah I would say Low also.
-
Everything that was released on RCA
That's Man Who Sold... thru Scary Monsters. This is the greatest artistic span of brilliance in the history of music. It's really easier to say which you don't need. Pre s/t and then Let's Dance forward to Black Tie. Pick it up again with Outside thru Reality if you're still keen.
-
probably
hunky dory/ziggy stardust.
but i'm really starting to love heroes and lodger.
-
Diamond Dogs front cover freaks me out
Great album though, but has to be trumped by hunky dory
-
anything from the 70s
is solid gold
and madly varied -
Low
Then Station to Station and Hunky Dory. You can't really go wrong with any of his 70's albums, mind you.
-
Scary monsters
Then low and probably ziggy stardust and the spiders from mars
-
Also try the Idiot by Iggy Pop
...as Bowie pretty much wrote it anyway and it was his dry run for Low.
But Hunky Dory and Low. Like everyohe else said.
-
the labyrinth soundtrack
end of thread. next question please.
-
Amazing 10 year run of form throughout the 70s
Best 6 in this order:
Low
Ziggy Stardust
Diamond Dogs
Aladin Sane
Heroes
Station to Station -
Station to Station
But they're nearly all pretty good. Even bad Bowie is still better than most other bands. The first Tin Machine album is worth a listen to as well. No, really.
-
Ziggy Stardust is my fave
Blew my head off the first time I listened to it and has been my fave ever since.
Then probably Low. Could it be much different? His 70s stint can't be matched by many.
-
Low
then probably Lodger
-
Low is the quintessential Bowie album
But Scary Monsters is the best.
-
1. Station to Station
2. Scary monsters
3. Ziggy
4. Aladin Sane
5. Low
6. Diamond Dogs
7. Lets DanceThis order changes all the time but these are my favs of his!!
-
1. Station To Station
2. The Man That Sold The World
3. Ziggy Stardust
4. Hunky Dory
5. Young AmericansFor the record, I actually really, REALLY like Never Let Me Down. Certainly better than Tonight and the woeful Black Tie, White Noise, which is the only Bowie album I would say is shite.
-
at last a mention for
Young Americans. A stone cold classic in my view
-
could you make a case for Never Let Me Down plz?
I think Time Will Crawl might be the only song I've heard off it and I quite like it, but the word of mouth is so poor... and Black Tie... includes Jump They Say, are you including that as a bad song? Because, like, I'd seriously disagree...
-
everything between The Man Who Sold The World and Let's Dance is basically very good
bar Pin Ups (which still has moments), just pick at random and enjoy.
-
Jump They Say is the only redeeming feature of BTWN
as far as I'm concerned.
As for Never Let Me Down, "Time Will Crawl" is a fantastic song, but you've also got "Day In, Day Out", "Zeroes", "Beat Of Your Drum". There's nothing REALLY crap on there (with the possible exception of "Glass Spider"), not like the title track on Tonight and his cover of "God Only Knows".
If you're on Spotify, all his albums are on there, as well as numerous singles. The 12inch mix of "Magic Dance" is something quite, quite special.
-
aladdin sane.
watch that man, fantastic tune.
-
SCARY MONSTERS
Scary monsters - easily his best work, by some way. But everything he touched in the ´69 to ´82 was at least an 8. Even Peter and the Wolf.
Low - universally loved, but many people I know who love this record listen to the first half but never the second. Has anyone else found this?
-
Ziggy is the Hook
Now your hooked, first try Hunky Dory with your eyes closed and marvel at the existential lyrics, some dark stuff, not as simple as it seems, then track these types of high brow references through the years. Every album has some good tracks. Try Iggy Pop and Velvet Underground for important references. Listen to the Bauhaus version of Ziggy its awsome! I would suggest you try the BBC sessions CD's some of them are amazing and contain good versions of songs that are poor '60 vaudeville. Then go in cronological order (as good a way to go as any) as you will then understand why each album is different and important, Low and Heroes really show where the new romantics were getting the synth inspiration from (esp. Japan and John Foxx) but are best left until seriously hooked on Bowie. and you will be
-
Ziggy or Hunky?
Can't decide.
-
Re Diamond Dog cover art
freaks dude out, above: The original art freaked RCA out, too. Heh. They airbrushed -out the dog's genitals for release. Fans will of big red dog penises will want to hunt this down. Ha!

Diamond Dogs, Station To Station, Man Who Sold The World
Just avoid the mid to late 80's stuff. 'Never Let Me Down' is terrible :(
