That's Man Who Sold... thru Scary Monsters. This is the greatest artistic span of brilliance in the history of music. It's really easier to say which you don't need. Pre s/t and then Let's Dance forward to Black Tie. Pick it up again with Outside thru Reality if you're still keen.

But they're nearly all pretty good. Even bad Bowie is still better than most other bands. The first Tin Machine album is worth a listen to as well. No, really.

Blew my head off the first time I listened to it and has been my fave ever since.

Then probably Low. Could it be much different? His 70s stint can't be matched by many.

For the record, I actually really, REALLY like Never Let Me Down. Certainly better than Tonight and the woeful Black Tie, White Noise, which is the only Bowie album I would say is shite.

Now your hooked, first try Hunky Dory with your eyes closed and marvel at the existential lyrics, some dark stuff, not as simple as it seems, then track these types of high brow references through the years. Every album has some good tracks. Try Iggy Pop and Velvet Underground for important references. Listen to the Bauhaus version of Ziggy its awsome! I would suggest you try the BBC sessions CD's some of them are amazing and contain good versions of songs that are poor '60 vaudeville. Then go in cronological order (as good a way to go as any) as you will then understand why each album is different and important, Low and Heroes really show where the new romantics were getting the synth inspiration from (esp. Japan and John Foxx) but are best left until seriously hooked on Bowie. and you will be
