Still Haven't Found...
New Years Day
Infinitely likeable.
How did they become one of the most easily dislikeable bands of all time?

bono...
...morphed into a d-bag.
The turdy albums of the 00s/Bono's quest to save the world/Being rich bastards
and recording w/ Green Day
it is hard to explain this now, in our cynical age
but they have always been a band that made clear their values
people who share those values, were attracted
the emphasis on personal responsibility 'I can't change the World but I can change the world in me' had a certain impact
plus a handsome drummer
... sits badly with being mega rich
I don't know
but I was listening to the Unforgettable Fire the other day, and forgot that it's actually really good. Shame they went rubbish really.
aye, good album that one.
hypnotising in most parts, it all went downhill after that though, esp. during their "American phase".
Bono...
Once was endearing in his overblown-ness. On some level, I could almost forgive the silly gestures because his intentions were 'right'.
Something changed around 2000 with this 'desire to be the biggest band in the world' and since then theres been a progressive downward trajectory. It's hard to feel anything but patronised when he'll speak of the evils of corporations or whatever while going on a tour 'brought to you in association with Blaclberry'.
Still, pretty much everything up to Zooropa is gold.
Pride is awesome
Also if you havent already got it 'Wide Awake In America' is amazing, the live version of 'A Sort Of Homecoming' and 'Bad' are breathtaking.

I went off them because of their last 2 albums which were utter mor shite.
While POP and Zooropa were at least trying new things they just blew it when they recorded these albums. Bono has always been arse but he was tolerbale when the music was good.....just!

I've not bought an album since achtung baby, most been pap since,
but I still can't wait to see them in the summer, such a good live band. There aren't many bands that can fill stadiums, and I mean fill it as in with a huge production, not just bums on seats.

Dear God! You like "Still haven't found..."?!?!
That song makes me want to throw up. Sorry.
Achtung Baby is their stand out best. If it's not true to say that most people agree with that claim, it's true at least that most people who don't have an in-principle hatred for U2 will think of it as one of their better albums.
In addition to Achtung Baby, most U2 fans tend to rate Joshua Tree and Unforgettable Fire very highly. I count myself expressly as not part of that collective. While I've recently reconciled myself with the fact that I just don't like U2 very much, I'd much prefer to listen to the bulk of the stuff from the 90s (i.e. all of Achtung Baby, chunks of Zooropa and Pop, plus the first two singles from ATYCLB) than any of that "genuine", "heartfelt" crap.
Their 3 best songs: The Fly, Numb, Beautiful Day.
alll the bono hate aside
compare that new single to something like sunday bloody sunday
they're records have spiralled downward in quality quite a long way
Bono is a cunt
The guitarist, David Evans, is nearly 50 and yet still insists that he goes by the name 'The Edge', and Larry Mullen still wears those little dangly crucifix earrings that died out 25 years ago. There are plenty of reasons to hate them
I listened to Boy the other day
just to remind myself a) what they once were b) to keep me from sending Bono anthrax in the mail if I hear Sexy Boots one more time.
People dislike them based on their opinion of their view of the singer's personality
In a way it's quite depressing, as Bono has been doing what he does for over 25 years, his heart really is in it. It's too easy to point and criticise him. They still should pay their taxes though.
Plus: Boy, War, Unforgettable Fire, Joshua Tree, Achtung Baby, Zooropa, Passengers Vol 1 is a decent set of classic albums. NLOTH is a bit of a return to form, although Bono still needs to remember that he can write a decent set of lyrics.

i've not heard..
a sensible argument against bono. there is something unsettling about the way he preaches, so much so i can't get past that any more when listening to his music, but at least he's trying to do something about poverty etc..
i quite like the new album
i've also been listening to the best of 1990-2000, Discotheque and Hold Me, Kiss Me, Thrill me are tunes.
they just got old..
and dull, plus you lot are really age-ist so you're bound to hate them.
mind you, the rolling stones are still going and u2 are just becoming the new stones. 30 years of it though, you can't really knock em even if you hate the music!
I'm impressed how it's been the same 4 guys for 30 years
though I imagine mullen and clayton to be a bit unhappy at times
It's not so much Bono's polotics that put me off
It's that he sounds earnest to the point of crapping his pants when he's singing.
