Is Natasha Khan (of Bat For Lashes) the naughties answer to Kate Bush?
I really like the 'Fur & Gold' and I'm similarly impressed by 'Two Suns' so I'm very much looking forward to the Easter gig at the Birmingham Town Hall.
My partner's coming with me and she's older than me and this will probably be the first gig she's been to see featuring a contemporary band. I have been thinking about how to describe what she can expect and what the sound is like and I keep coming back to Kate Bush. As with anything, the comparison is inevitably weak, but I don't know, Natasha Khan as the naughties Kate Bush doesn't sound completely off. How would others describe them to someone else who had never heard them before?

Kate Bush was a major pop star and one of the biggest stars of her time.
Bat for Lashes is a cult singer who gets decent acclaim but nothing like the popular appeal.
So at the moment definitely not a fair comparison.
But we're not talking about 'popularity'...
...we're talking about what they do with their music - the sound, the the image... Natasha may well have the same impact Kate has had with time, or maybe she won't, but I'm looking for a way to describe the sound to someone who was a teenager during the eighties.
But the point is if someone compared someone to Kate Bush I'd expect cracking pop songs.
I'm not convinced Bat for Lashes has those.

That said, it's far too early to be making comparisons like this anyway I think.

Kate Bush was having number ones from her first single.
Frankly if Kate Bush wrote songs as good as Running Up That Hill, Wuthering Heights, Hounds of Love etc. these says they'd be as successful as they would be in any age.

If someone told me a band were like the Rolling Stones I wouldn't turn up expecting to hear timeless classics
It's the gist of things you want, to be put in the right ballpark. In that sense Kate Bush is a fair comparison.
But I can't see one reason why the jittering fuck I'd be enthused by the prospect
of going to see someone do songs like the Rolling Stones but not as well.
It's trying to sell a gig to someone on the grounds of "if you squint and use your imagination, they sound a bit like someone who's really good".

of someine to compare something to so that you get a vauge idea of what sort of area they are in, rather than just say dragging someone to a gig

I think that would be a good comparison
to make, for someone who hasn't been to a contemporary gig for a while. don't listen to these pedantic fucks trying to over complicate the matter.

...so thanks for that. I agree, when people try to describe a band/ artist to someone most people use loose comparisons, unless of course you're watching a tribute band.

As an unbelievably huge fan of Bjork, and a Kate Bush admirer, I'd say that no, Natascha Khan isn't really like either. Just because she wears interesting clothes and has a powerful voice does not make her immediately like these two women.
I mean, I can see some similarity though. I just find it hilarious how those are ALWAYS the two names that come up.
When I saw her supporting radiohead last year
Loads of people were saying how similar her voice is to Bjork's, at least live. Of course, that doesn't mean she won't be able to establish herself as a unique artist, in the same way that Thom Yorke and Matt Bellamy have tonally similar voices but approach songwriting from different perspectives.
