last.fm thread
i can't find the early sunday morning last.fm thread
so either i am not looking hard enough and am about to make an annoying waste of space post
or i am the idiot who starts it
anyway:

1. getting the split with 'kind of like spitting' triggered a non-stop lemuria listen session this week. I've sucessfully managed an un-healthy amount i'd say
5. Finally got my hands on the snoopy tv show score so i've pretty much had 'linus and lucy on repeat
7. Really gotten into this guy recently. His lyrics constantly seem relevant
18. Tried sleeping to m83 the other day. Car Chase Terror came on though and freaked me out so i didn't end up sleeping. Stupid m83

1. They seem to be top every week nowadays, quite right too.
2. I'm literally in love with her.
3. New album can't come soon enough.
10. Primavera! :D
Wow Ross, that is an impecible taste in music you have
Some quick maths tells me you've listened to music on average 13 hours a day.
probably
i've just dropped out of uni and living with my parents again, jobless, so i don't really do anything but listen to music and draw. It's really pathetic :)
the convention these days,
as people can't be bothered to wait for the proper charts to update anymore, seems to be to at least wait for midday. i applaud you for busting this one right open :D
also: that's a lot of plays! whats your username on there???
this shit ain't right, sir.
claybearcomics
also sorry lemonbrickcombo, i do realise this is usually yr gig. i'm pretty sure there was one at pretty much immediatly 00:00 last week though, and for some reason i felt compelled to post my chart somewhere on the internet.
This ain't my gig!
It's a free for all. Market forces prevail!
neat, thanks
just spotted the le loup in there as well. they need to hurry up and make a new album. also i need to get them to come play london sometime.
ok.

1) Henry you have alot to answer for.
2)AWESOME. Need more like this. Antipop and Clipse may be 2 of my favourites at the moment.
3a)Ordered the bible edition of Bees that made the honey in the Lion's skull last night. So much for a spending ban, but it finally, properly 'clicked' last week, so I guess the spend is justified. RIGHT?
3c) Perfect for early morning walking around town. I think when Damo Suzukis playing it clashes with something else. Need to double-check.
8) there's an overdue buying binge here. I may see to that today.
I'm Henry and I approve of this message
haven't heard antipop I shall check it.
I'm following suite on the Earth record next week.
I can't justify ordering a vinyl of a record I already own as a beautiful CD
that's annoying.
Antipop are pretty good. I really like Edan's solo stuff though. Possibly more so than his Antipop work. Clipse need to play ATP.
I don't have it on CD y'see
Did you vote for Clipse too?
Sure did.
i did that for SotL's Refinetment of Decline
i think for albums like that its worth it, having the three LPS and the lovely packging and great sound, just does it for me. a double cd pack is just too small for that albums greatness.
agree with anti pop consortium
they where all i was listening to a few weeks back, great album
Antipop, Erase Errata, Mlt Banan...
ace.

1) iTunes is stupid, this should read 'ENABLERS'. Tundra comes in a pine box. And it's well good. Like a more brutal sounding Slint.
2) 'Killtaker
3) Skronk. This is how I want Shellac to sound all the time. I wonder how many bass strings the Zu guy goes through per week.
6) b) Peel Session is the shit.
9) ADDED TO ATP. ADDED TO ATP. I'm wetting myself already.
pine box???
is it plain? I need to see this.
I'll take a picture in a bit.
Yeah, it's like a plain white pine box, with an engraved Enablers logo and some sort of geometric pentagram like star on the front. Inside it's got a velvet inlay and a numbered, hand painted booklet.
sounds pretty special.
are you going to the Mono date in London? I'm debating coming down for it now. Just waiting to hear confirmation about easter plans.
Of course I'm going
It's a thursday huh?
My housemate probably won't be in, so you could kip in our spare room. Provided you don't mind getting woken up by me when I leave for work about 7.30
that'd be lovely if I do
I may be flying out the next day anyway, so would probably be up early regardless.
wow that sounds real nice
i think i heard enablers way back and liked them. what's the best record, or should i just let my inner aesthete free and get this pine box one?
staying in doing loads of uni work leads to this...

12 HEALTH 22
13 The Very Best (Esau Mwamwaya & Radioclit) 15
14 Fight Like Apes 14
15 Maybeshewill 10
15 Wild Beasts 10
3) Crystal Antlers LP not as good as the masterpiece that is the EP but still good stuff
6) New YYYs has 2-3 absolute killer tracks. Nout sure about it as a whole. Might be a 'grower'
12) African singing/rapping over indie hits - the future?
oh and the new black lips...
fucking awesome. That is all.
That's a shame
I thought the Crystal Antlers EP showed a lot of promise, but didn't feel like the finished article. Anyone who liked the EP should listen to Comets On Fire lots.
The new Black Lips album is absolutely appalling though. Really. What happened to them? Let It Bloom was so so good.
My friend I saw last night has sent me loads of west african funk compilations this morning. Excellent.
ah thanks i'll check Comets On Fire out
and yeah the CA LP is worse than the EP. Still listenable though...i really quite like the BL. Each to their own i guess!
NICE LIST HARRY
although i disagree with all of your annotations. basically - i'm right.
ENABLERS sounds interesting. Worth a punt?
I like a lot of the stuff on your list and haven't come across them. And a brutal slint sounds like something I could get involved in.
definitely
They're kinda more post hardcorey and the guy's poetry is better. It creeps up on you though, because suddenly the album is this cascade of noise and nightmarish poe-isms, when it starts out with a gently mournful love song.
nice
just ordered it
how about that Enablers song
where he goes 'saddle the bitch!' and 'whhhhhhere! has she been?'
ain't heard it!
I bought Tundra completely on a whim because of the pretty box
it's on that album I think!
Unless my brother is being a dick
by that I mean
he supposedly sent me an mp3 from the new album and the guy says 'saddle the bitch!' at the start of it
I need to listen harder obvs
mmhmmm

10 New album. Not sure if I like it.
I got an M. Ward album in the week
it was alright, probably not worth the fuss that people on here make about him, although She & Him were good.
Which one did you get?
'Transfiguration of Vincent' is absolutely incredible.
Post-war
It's not bad, but nothing really special, a bit of a 7/1 kinda album imo
* 7/10
Yeah
Post-War is nothing too special. For me, it's just a watered down version of what he does best.

that Axemen video is good
I heard an Axemen song on the internet radio and I didn't like it very much, but then they played the solo single from the Tyvek bloke and it was totally excellent.
yea i didnt listne befoer this week idk this is cool tho
The Axemen is a New Zealand band formed around 1981 in protest against the South African Springbok rugby team tour of New Zealand, a tour which created great controversy, especially as was in contradiction to New Zealand's obligations under the Gleneagles Agreement
that is cool
I totally just learned about the Springboks tour of NZ in 1981. Most violent protests in NZ history!
The Hunches
latest is v good indeed.

great taste in pants and just generally great
I like Naked City
haven't really heard anything else. I have no idea where to start with any of that. But the pants are cool. And the ponytail was cool too
Naked City is great
but i'm not crazy about the spazzy grind stuff in the middle. I'm more interested in the crime jazz featured either side
Don't ask me where to head next though..
Pere Ubu - I didn't like them, but I think I might now if I listened again
you definitely should
incredible band. I suppose Dave Thomas is a bit of an acquired taste, but for me he's one of the best of his kind. Intelligent, full of character, but with a very sharp sense of humour.
You should probably check out Terminal Tower: An Archival Collection, their collection of early singles and b-sides. A perfect combination of art and rock, especially on the first few tracks (which feature Peter Laughner, truly one of the best post punk guitarists. Shame he didn't last..)
That's the thing- big Dead Boys fan
and really enjoying Rocket from the Crypt. Plus I heard an ace live set of theirs with Laughner on spotify. But yeah, I got Dub Housing and really didn't like it. Maybe time to try again.

1. Red Apple Falls is amazing. There are so many bands that I know a little about, but have never really listened to properly, and it's albums like these that remind me I need to so more...
2. Absolutely incredible in Bristol on Thursday, possibly one of the best gigs I've ever seen. I wrote a review of it here - http://kunstlicher.blogspot.com/2009/02/as-grinning-bongo-player-slaps-out.html
4. Supported A&M - they're got an awful name, an awful album title and a terrible image (on the internet anyway, they were fine live), which may explain why their album came out in 2007 and they've not done much since, but they were pretty impressive live.
5b. See 1), but replace Red Apple Falls with The Bees Made Honey in the Lion's Skull
7. I always thought Howe Gelb did the voiceover for the short Pixar film Boundin' (the Jackalope). Apparently it's not him, but he's still awesome.

3. Very good album, though I think I might actually prefer the Fuck Buttons remix of 'If I Had A Heart'.
5.iii. Brilliant. As good as the hype suggests.
8. Gets very boring.
9.ii. Finally got round to listening to them after Last.fm had them in my recommendations for months. Not so sure about them. Listening to them just makes me want to listen to Sonic Youth or The JAMC instead.
9.iii Carpal Tunnel Syndrome - Not that great; was disappointed.
In other news, I listened to Iran - Dissolver for the first time this week on Spotify. Apart from about one or two songs (one of which I think was 'I Can Feel What?'), I thought it was embarrassing. And 'Cape Canaveral / Buddy (reprise)' is an awful, awful song.
I'd like to point out, I listened to 75 artists this week, this is just the top 10.
1. Dinosaur Jr. - 81
2. M83 - 46
3. Black Lips - 45
4. The King Khan and BBQ Show - 33

1. "The Century of Self" really is quite good.
3. "Hush" on the other hand has kind of passed me by so far.
11a. Foals are still incredibly average, I don't know why I tried to play their album again, it wasn't worth it.
13a. Has anyone heard the last Ephel Duath album? I didn't even realised they released one in 2008. I revisited "The Painters Pallette" to remind myself of what I could've missed out on.
Re: Ephel Duath
Yeah I was sent it for reviewing. To be honest, I thought it was terrible.

1) dug out Beat Konducta 1 & 2 and Shades of Blue for the first time in a while. Lovely.
2) brutally loud shoegaze-drone stuff. Grandeur of Hair is a top, top album.
6) lo-fi German obscuremo/post-punk from the late 90s. Their 7" is near perfect imo.
that should be 6a)
obv.
that Goslings album is great!
how about that nice bit at the end of 'overnight'. That is a _nice bit_
Have you ever listened to this show?
http://www.wfmu.org/playlists/BT
He seems to play a couple of weird German post punk things every week that sound cool. Amongst other stuff that you may possibly like
the whole album is great
Sanibel is probably my favourite track on there. I don't know if they're as loud live as on record but I wouldn't mind finding out. I hadn't heard that show btw but I will check it out, cheers
I've just introduced myself to Garndeur of Hair this week
It's pretty fantastic. I'm sure I listened to it more than Last.fm said though..It would be interesting to see what they're like live
Have you heard Gold Miner's Daughters by Pocahaunted? its really good. I wish I'd known about it coming out though, I would have liked to have bought it.
"Grandeur of Hair" of course. GRAN.

Crazy Love, by Honey is Cool, is an amazing album. Most of the Beatles plays are from listening to the second side of Abbey Road on repeat. If my iPod scrobbled properly then there would be more plays. Or if Last.FM magically scrobbled my CD Player or turntable...

1. i've been playing this on repeat: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g7IhW_PmdXo you to do same now yes?
2. i'd only heard Dirk's Mansion before this week and thought it was awful, my friend played me the album last sunday and i completely abandoned my position - great band.
3. Funanori is Mike Watt and some Japanese lass called Kaori505 who plays a banjo type thing called a sanshin... i wasn't aware of them at all and got their split EP with Lite entirely for the mathrocking, turns out this half is massively superior. folksy far eastern flutes one minute and Funhouse sax, sanshin & guitar jams the next.
4. the other half of the Tiny Twofer EP, pretty standard fare for them but i love the guy's drumming.
5. Mzabalazo is such a tune. punkyfunk.
6. Elliot Whale Boy continue to be the best small band in the country
7. new album - shit hot. bringing the metal in a way that Mastodon have apparently abandoned on Crack The Skye
8. Chaosphere
9. best BBs side project

2. Melancholia again. As much as I love Basinski's extended compositions, I might like this collection of pop hits even more.
3. Still don't know how I feel about Mogwai. Sometimes I listen to them and think, oh this is nice, then forget about them for another 6 months.
4. I never get that feeling with these lot.

1 This is the first time I’ve listened properly to Xiu Xiu – mostly to Fabulous Muscles and A Promise, but also to Women As Lovers and La Forêt. A year ago I was not ready for Xiu Xiu, and frankly found it just too challenging. Perhaps I have changed; a lot can change in a year. Among the pain and anguish there is a stark beauty. More listens will follow as thanks to eMusic I now have all six albums.
6b No, I’ve not yet heard the album.
9 I like this a lot.
10a I hope to see Women again before too long.
"Knife Play" by Xiu Xiu is brilliant
the only other one I have is "The Air Force", which sounds like Xiu Xiu lite in comparison, it's nowhere near as noisy or dark and suffers because of it. I don't think Xiu Xiu were meant to write heartfelt indie pop songs, with minimal electronic background music, there's too much of that on the AF release for my liking, "The Boy Soprano" is a stunning song though.
Which album of theirs is your favourite so far then? I'm assuming it's one of those first 2 you mentioned.
Fabulous Muscles is incredible
I've listened to this 6 times. I feel really a bit of a tard for taking so long to getting around to Xiu Xiu. Perhaps This Heat helped me get to this stage. Jamie Stewart uses his voice in a way I've not really heard before.
The others I've listened to much less, and I'm yet to start with Knife Play. However, after only two listens I can say I really like Women As Lovers.
I'm considering going to the Jamie Stewart gig at Cargo on 25 May.
I will concentrate on Knife Play next

2) Codeine seem to be getting a few mentions on DiS these days, which is all to the good. If you haven't already discovered them through the slowcore week then discover them now.
