Hopefully a new album is on the way!
... to be my favorite band. Unfortunately their output seems to have gotten weaker and weaker since geogaddi. Hopefully they have some more choice tracks in them still.
I quite liked The Campfire Headphase though. They're rather leisurely workers, I suspect another record is a while off yet.
I've been told Headphase is - on its own merits - better than Music has the Right, and it may well be, but it was a huge step backwards after Geogaddi. Very disappointing.
headphase is better than MHTRTC? No.
"headphase is better than MHTRTC?" you cannot be serious!
Serious that MHTRTC is about infinite times better than headphase? Yes I am serious. Campfire headphase is a pile of severed bollox.
You are seriously mistaken if you think that Campfire Headphase was a pile of bollox, and in respect to BOC, one album wouldn't be considered good or worse. They have their own approach to each album. I personally enjoyed Headphase more than MHTRTC. MHTRTC is what got them recognized, but I think they have some better tracks on the Campfire album. But Aquarius is still my favoritte BOC song. They are equally amazing works that a truely original group has put out in their field, being Boards of Canada. Be picky if you want, but you're missing the exploratory mindset that the music is all about.
although MHTRTC is much better than both. In a beautiful place in the country is my favourite releasde though, each track is stunning on that ep.
But when MHTRTC came out, he was just listening to indie crap or whatever, so he didn't quite understand what a samey scene it reshaped. Or something.
I hope they do a wee bit more with the guitar-y angle. Maybe a touch of Fennesz-style carry-on. Or perhaps they could retire two albums ago and stay legendary.
I like to drink coffee, dip biscuits and read news to it daily. Wonderful stuff, where where should I go next?
In A Beautiful Place Out In The Country EP, and then Geogaddi. Also worth picking up are Hi Scores, Twoism, and BOC Maxima. Start with the first two though.
...music for drinking coffee and eating biscuits to. I really don't understand the hype. MHTRTC didn't really do anything that Aphex Twin and Autechre had already done 5 years earlier. That sound was already dated by 1998 (or even '95 when Twoism came out) and both of those artists had moved on.
Ok so they do a good approximation of that library music/BBC radiophonic workshop sound that conjures up memories of my youth, especially on Geogaddi - my favourite BoC album. However their beats tend to be really uninspired and formulaic and don't really seem to connect with the music at all.
Incidentally the Ghost Box label is putting out some brilliant albums that evoke the golden era of public information films, which is a good thing since BoC sound more like Morcheeba sans vocals these days.
To me what they were so good at was the sounddesign side of things. No one else had/has that lofi slowed down tape thing like they do. Sure, they have simple beats, but thats part of the vibe. Aphex and Autechre never sounded anything like BoC. When an artist comes along that you can recognize instantly because they have such a signature sound it's something special. BoC definitely had that.
especially Amber, which is a brilliant album, has enough moments to make me think I'd heard it all before when MHTRTC came out. The track Yulquen, for example, would fit on any BoC album. Ditto the first track on I Care Because You Do by Aphex.
I'm not saying I hate BoC. In fact I listen to them quite a lot but as background (as opposed to ambient) music. I just struggle to understand why they are considered to be serious innovators and it wouldn't bother me in the slightest if they never released another album.
did you read that BoC are considered innovators? I have never seen them described that way. I would certainly agree that they aren't innovators. They do one thing and do it extremely well.
But they've done some really quite interesting stuff - Chinook and XYZ spring to mind.
Does anyone know why XYZ was missed off the Peel Session EP? It's the only interesting one from the whole bloody session.
one trick ponies. Nothing wrong with that. They have been doing basically the same song over and over again since BOC Maxima. Finally on Campfire headphase they start using guitars... and it turns to shite. Definitely one of my all time favorite groups. Not everyone needs to be pushing boundaries all the time.
But MHTRC has the best title of any record ever. I think.
although I reckon Untilted comes close.
but it's a good point, and not one i read very often...Yulquen is so much better than anything BOC did. it's gorgeous and pastoral but at the same time feels to me, kinda dark and heartbreaking in a way not that much BOC stuff is. Closer they get to that for my money is a couple of tracks on Geogaddi but it's still not quite there...
Try the new Lukid album, Foma. It's like a sparser version of Flying Lotus, very nice.
Should check out the releases from the Ghost Box label. Especially -
The Advisory Circle - Other Channels
Belbury Poly - From an Ancient Star
should check out Mordant Music and Trunk.
Also very good labels, with a similar focus.
My favourite label right now - by far.
Will be checking out Belbury Poly tonight :D
there wont be another Boards Of Canada record, one of them (i forget which one), moved to New Zealand or Australia a couple of years ago and theyve often hinted that the BOC is a finite thing.
I've been tracking the discussions on the BoC subforum at We Are The Music Makers for about a year, ever since the 'little black box' appeared at the end of the discography on the BoC website, which some took as a sign that a new release was imminent.
Anyway, there's been zero discussion about one of the brothers moving away. The general consensus - from those who claim to have some priveliged access to BoC-knowledge - is that there is something coming.
Just picking up on a few other weak signals, BoC also updated their MySpace status last year to "in the studio" and have replied on their Facebook page to suggest (without ever being clear about it) that the rumours about new material are true.
A lot of people are pretty sceptical, as I am, that we're going to get anything this year but I don't see any evidence that they've stopped making music.
only just noticed I'm replying to a 3-year-old message. Perhaps that's time enough for someone to emigrate and immigrate?
Best I scroll down to the new messages at the bottom of the thread. Egg and my face are in alignment.
Just came here to see if there was any news on anything new from BoC. While there's nothing doing as yet, I checked out The Advisory Circle on your recs. WoW.Great stuff, Elfrim!
As a kid growing up in the 70's, I'm a big fan of those old public service films that came out then, and they really evoke that spirit. Anyway, while on first listening, they don't IMHO, quite have the psychlogical depth of BoC, but I'm sure I'll discover things the more I listen. They've been a great find. Cheers! I'll check out other Ghost Box stuff as well.
BTW, I know it won't be everyone's cuppa, but being a fan of FSOL, I've been listening a lot to Yage's The Woodlands of Old. It's REALLY dark and unsettling and comes highly recommended for people who like their music a bit on the dark and disturbing side.
Anyone who's heard it, can they suggest anything similar?
Not quite as electronic, but has that same dreamy sort of sound. I recommend May Your Heart Be The Map as a good place to start, but any of their albums rule. Check them out on Myspace for a cheeky listen.
Dextro...another Scottish bloke that does psychedelia, except with a kind of post-punk tinge. His album 'Winded' is lush.
His album Consequence Musicis pure quality and I`m suprised it`s not more well known/talked about. http://dextro.bandcamp.com/album/consequence-music
Consequence Music is also one of Dextro's greats. Still think Winded is superior though.
Would love some new stuff but I'm more than happy with what I've got just now. :)
...BOC have put up a blank album within the discography on their site to indicate that a new record is due, and there is a blank space up there at the moment.
has been there for about a year. I saw it and got super excited in early 2011. :(
that the rumours are true:)
Also here's the link for Dextro's 'Winded', free DL! :)
Anyone heard any more news on the new BOC? I heard it might be a double album?
Also,Dextro released a new music video piece yesterday, quality. :) http://youtu.be/EupsvN1cOcU
By updating their Facebook page with the history of their EP and album release dates which potentially set up an announcement of a new album on April 1st, which never happened.
So no news in effect.
but a few weeks ago pitchfork ran this-
Oh well....! Just need to wait. Maybe forever. . . . . .
