what is it?
shows off every aspect of their various styles, whereas stuff like disintegration or the head on the door are like snapshots of that point in the bands career.
End of thread.
... and being absolutely spot on.
They have never made a finer album. In fact, precious few bands have even come close to making a finer album. A true all time classic.
a hundred million times Disintergration. it's perfect. then Pornography.
Such a shame that aside from those two and Seventeen Seconds they've not made another album that works as an album. They've got more great songs than most bands could dream of creating.
and to Pornography and Seventeen Seconds as close contenders, but I must protest the oversight of Faith, which is, to my mind, the equal of the two albums released either side of it.
is my personal favourite, but it's not there best work.
is cruelly cruelly overlooked
IF ITS THE LAST THING YOU EVER DO
I as an obsessive Cure fan from about '89 to about '96. I used to play nothing but Cure records for weeks on end...
Loved this one.
Disintegration is the best moody cure album.
though it never seems to get many mentions when this question is asked. The Head on the Door and Disintregation are both close anyway.
2- shit.. its really hard to pick one. They have a very strong body of work up until wish. But i think that if you choose the best parts of seventeen seconds, faith and pornography you would end up with the ultimate cure record, even better than disintegration.
If you were going to get something by The Cure, I'd make it Staring At The Sea, which is their singles up to 1985. It's more or less perfect.
As that's cheating though, I'm going to say The Head On The Door.
Has to be!Many of their more celebrated albums feel quite grandiose and 'staged'.This one has a stark beauty and more timeless feel.
is my fave.
on play.com, as in fact is Kiss me.., faith and most of their back cat
You don't need The Top though (honestly you really don't)
...one is just ethereal and ambient and the other is a stark piece of brutal beauty. The other albums stand up well but these are the high points for me. Twin monoliths.
So far we've had 'Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me', 'Seventeen Seconds', 'Pornography' and 'Faith', I think.
with Wish. Supposed to be a new 5.1 mix to come with Wish, might be the same deal with Disintegration. Hope so, imagine Plainsong in surround sound would sound very choice.
without a doubt.
in that order.
so predictable but i also love japanese whispers.
dont get mixed up- totally pointless.
and also wild mood swings sucks arse ('cept for jupiter crash)
Haven't heard loads of them though or anything.
but it suffers from being a mixture of pop songs like Doing The Unstuck and Friday I'm In Love and bleak, Disintegration-like epics.
Doesn't gel that well as an album. That said, it has some of my favourite Cure songs on it.
"from the edge of the deep green sea"? masterpiece
3. Kiss Me Kiss me Kiss me
4. Seventeen Seconds
5. The Head On the Door
8. The Cure
9. Three Imaginary Boys
10. Wild Mood Swings
11. The Top
haven't heard the new one
...forgot "Bloodflowers"! Insert that one between "The Cure" & "Three Imaginary Boys"
faith - £3
pornography (deluxe 2 disc jobby) - £7
greatest hits (2 cds, 1 DVD) £5!!!!!!!!!!!!
had to buy it all.
=2. Pornography, Faith, Seventeen Seconds, Wish, THOTD
=7. Boys Don't Cry (screw TIB), Kiss Me, 4:13 Dream, Bloodflowers
then a big gap to
=11 WMS, The Cure, The Top
I love a good rank.
I wouldn't put The Cure in with the stinkers. Ross Robinson may have rubbed up the band the wrong way, but he got the best out of them performance wise. Like Bloodflowers, it's due a re-evaluation, and has lots of good stuff on it. It opens well, The Promise is fantastic, the singles are strong, and while it tails off at the end, it's still a decent piece of work.
Both are much better than 4:13 Dream imho, which isn't the comeback everyone is making it out to be. Underneath The Stars and The Hungry Ghost aside, for me it seems very Cure by numbers, lacking in heart and material. Holding on to songs for the sister album is seeming like a bad idea now, when they could have cut the chaff and kept the wheat. On the plus side, at least Bob's got a lot of material for the next one ready to go.
but the vocals and some aspects of the production grate.
I loved from the get go "End of the World" and "Labyrinth", and I agree that Lost and The Promise are strong. I also quite like Never (which has been subject to some serious hate). But I find it hard to listen to the album in its entirety.
I do agree that Bloodflowers isn't as bad as I used to think. Ever since I removed "Where the Seagulls Always Shit" from the tracklisting, I've enjoyed it immensely. In that modified form (and including "Coming Up" after "Maybe Someday"), I'd go so far as to place it in the equal second category.
Re. 4:13 Dream, I'm struggling -- and have long been struggling -- hard to refrain from admitting that you're right. I disagree about which songs are the highlights, but it's true that the album lacks any oomph, any feeling.
I think I need a fourth ranking:
=2. Pornography, Faith, Seventeen Seconds, Wish, THOTD, Bloodflowers (edit)
=8. Boys Don't Cry (screw TIB), Kiss Me
=10. 4:13 Dream, The Cure
=12. WMS, The Top
Or rather, I can't listen to that. Bob's voice is not what it was, and he can no longer sing material from pre-1990. Instead, he shouts it, and that makes the Pornography set unlistenable, and also ruins much of the Disintegration set. I also don't like the high treble settings on Simon's bass, which are particularly noticeable in the Disintegration set.
Everyone else likes the earlier ones.
I actually like that one. the most psychedelic.
it's not the best one, but i don't understand why people rank it so low. For me Shake dog shake, Birdmad girl, Dressing up and The caterpillar are all classic cure songs
just after it came out, repeatedly mentioning that it had been mastered 'too slow'. The real problem was he was overstretched by touring with Siouxsie the Banshees and The Cure, and recorded The Top almost completely by himself. Half of that time he was shitfaced or smashed on coke in an attempt to be straight enough to record.
"...as soon as the Top was finished, I wanted bits of it to be different; but it was too late to re-record it because I was working to such absurd deadlines to keep the Banshees thing going as well." RS
It got bad reviews when it came out, and to be fair, it is a bit of a mess. There are some good songs on it, but only a few of them feel like they haven't been rushed. I'd put Wailing Wall in that list as well, but at best it's a five track album, with a very sloppy mix. They fixed some of the problems with the reissue.
The reissue of the album Cap'n Bob did with The Glove before The Top is interesting though, because it's got his vocal demos on the second disc, and there are a couple of great tracks on there, 'Punish me with kisses' especially. If he'd have recut that with the Cure, maybe stuck a decent version of Ariel on there, I think they might have gotten a very different reaction to The Top.
I used to really love the Top (I think it's not uncommon for committed Cure fans to go through a phase of declaring that album their favourite), but I agree with Teepee_uk: it's got about 5 or 6 good tracks on it. TO my mind, they are SDS, Wailing Wall, Caterpillar, Give Me It, The Top, and possibly Birdmad Girl; sorry, don't really like Piggy in the Mirror.
I think he and Severin did the psychedelia thing better on Blue Sunshine -- though there are a couple of duds on that album too. I reckon if RS saved a few more of the Glove songs for the Top, the latter might've been a better album. Might have to look into getting that DE re-release: the Smith vocal tracks over (I'm presuming) Like an Animal and Punish Me with Kisses would be interesting to hear.
...is the best collection of tracks
with pornography and seventeen seconds fighting for a close second spot.
kiss me kiss me kiss me
Faith (this album is faaaaaaaaaaar better than pornography or 17 seconds )
