  • Not to bothered by any of these,

I wish Jesu, Harvey Milk, and Wolves In The Throne Room would all confirm.

    Laurie3df | 24 Feb '09, 10:12 | X
    • I really wish nothing had been said about HM being close to confirming.

      JGJug @Laurie3df | 24 Feb '09, 10:30 | X
  • Hmm

Good on Killing Joke, Mae Shi and Hush Arbors. I don't know the others...

No M. Ward or Neurosis though, and, surprisingly enough, no Pavement or NMH.

    • "surprisingly enough"

      hahaha

I'm stoked about this. KILLING STOKED. Also, the Mae Shi are one of the funnest bands around. Recognise.

    Jamie_Summers | 24 Feb '09, 10:16 | X
  • I didn't expect Killing Joke to confirm

so that's awesome news. This Will Destroy You sound pretty interesting too. Is Liam Finn a relation to Neil Finn? Please say no.

    theetersecrimp | 24 Feb '09, 10:16 | X
    • What?!?!

Please transfer This Will Destroy You to the Breeders bill, immediately. Thank you

Supposed to be particularly impressive live as well.

  • God I'm so sick of all this indie whining

The line-up features Sleep & The Jesus Lizard. If that doesn't get you ludicrously excited, the problem lies with you, not the festival.

    Battlecat @DenimDemon | 24 Feb '09, 10:58 | X
    • Exactly... The Fucking Jesus Lizard are playing!!

What more can you do? Some people are just whinging ratbags.

Yes, the line-up for the last Fans event had some arguably bigger indie names on the bill, but the stipulation this year to not include any act who has played an ATP before significantly reduced the field of those who can be approached. And rightly so - this is an opportunity to see a whole bunch of new bands in the ATP environment, which we all know is special in itself.

Just look what we've got going down... Devo, Jesus Lizard, Young Marble Giants, Sleep, Health, Shearwater, Pink Mountaintops, Hush Arbors, Beirut, M83, Marnie Stern, Parts & Labor, Jeffrey Lewis, Mae Shi... and lots more to come. I can't be more excited!

      vsvsvs @Battlecat | 24 Feb '09, 11:23 | X
  • I kind of agree

There are some good bands on there but this utterly pales compared to the last Vs Fans line-up and is their cheapest bill yet. These are mostly all acts I could see down at Water Rats or The Luminaire and get plenty of change from a tenner. With the event less than 3 months away I can't see them getting any more big acts to play at such short notice either. Breeders line up looks much, much better value for money.

    baraccas @DenimDemon | 24 Feb '09, 11:03 | X
    • Nah, it's way more interesting

Also, I'd pay a lot more to see Devo, KJ, Jesus Lizard and Sleep at the water rats. Objectively, you're wrong.

      lemonbrickcombo @baraccas | 24 Feb '09, 11:11 | X
      • so how good a band is depends on how much they charge for tickets?

        what horseshit.

        lemonbrickcombo @DenimDemon | 24 Feb '09, 11:54 | X
      • stop moaning!

You've got two bands reforming for the event, and a load of varied, different stuff. Are you only going to be happy if Sonic Youth/Liars/Shellac play every time???

Anyway, Devo=£30.00, Killing Joke = £25.00, Spitiulaized =£20.00, Sleep and Jesus Lizard would also be £25.00 each at least for their own gigs. So you have £125.00 worth of bands already playing. So how is the ticket price too high>

        zahidf @lemonbrickcombo | 24 Feb '09, 11:20 | X
    • Killing Joke

  • QUESTION FOR JATP SUMMERS:

What's ATP's 'policy' on the vs the fans line-up? Because obviously there's a random element in the selection of bands, will ATP try to balance the line-up against what the fans choose or do ATP choose bands to match the general feel created by the fan choices?

    ?

  • It's fine....

I personally knew nothing of the following bands before i saw them at atp and i wouldn't have described any of them as BIG announcements at the time (some coz i was young & naive), but they were all (and are) fantastic and mostly legends in my eyes:

oxes, silkworm, lungfish, phil roebuck, arcwelder, bad wizard, need new body, king kong, quintron & miss pussycat, gris gris, destroyer, lilys, akron family, current 93, grizzly bear, shit & shine, times new viking, pissed jeans, ghostigital, junior brown, tweak bird........

So it's very likely that a handful of he lesser known acts will become your favourites, i reckon. Too many big names and you wouldn't watch the smaller names. Remember you are in a chalet too, not a tent, so i don't think you can question the value for money.

Why bother comparing it to any other festival anyway, Reading is always going to have about 10 times as many bands, coz ten times as many people go. Even if you get 'big' names, it doesn't mean they are going to give you the best show. I thought Modest Mouse, Slint & Vampire Weekend were all outclassed by many many smaller acts at their respective atp's.

Just waiting for some decent DJ's to be announced, then I'm ready.....

    Very happy with todays announcements!

  • More cheap dross

on the ATP side of the line-up, i can only guess they've got an expensive surprise lined up for us. NIN and Jane's Addiction might be an expensive surprise.
Whatever's said, this current line-up as a whole is cheapskate - those defending it either didn't got to the last fans one or work for ATP.
It's funny, you choose bands that haven't done ATP and you end up with a line-up of reformations, side projects and no marks.
Not that the reformations are unwelcome, but it would be nice to have at least a couple of active cutting edge bands playing.

    • well

i didn;t go to the last fans one: who played exactly?

And you can;t blame the promoters for the fans vote.

And don't get a ticket if you don't like the line up! they put all the big bands in the first few announcements. Don't get a ticket and complain about the line up!

      zahidf @yolkboy | 24 Feb '09, 12:14 | X
    • I wouldn't say it was a cheapskate line-up

considering that we've only had 29 of the likely 45 bands announced & it already includes Devo, Jesus Lizard, Spiritualised, Killing Joke, Beirut, M83 and Sleep.

I'd be pissed if there are no other 'big' names announced in the next 16 bands but they were announcing bands like Why? right up till April for the last fans vote.

      ScreamingJay @yolkboy | 24 Feb '09, 12:22 | X
  • I went to the last Fans one

and it was brilliant. I also went to the Jake and Dinos one, which had a very thin line-up (about 20 bands??) and had a brilliant time there too. Don't work for ATP.

    bobbi_soccer | 24 Feb '09, 12:09 | X
    • Jake and Dinos weekend was great

Also the Slint weekend, which had about 2 bands I had heard of, was probably the most fun I've ever had at an ATP. So yeah, hush.

      roastthemonaspit @bobbi_soccer | 24 Feb '09, 12:13 | X
      • some band times

Spiritualized are down for the sunday of ATP on their myspace. Sleep are playing twice on 9th and 10th. I really hope it aint fucking around getting wristbands. If you do hopefully you can decide in advance incase one of the sets clashes with someone else good.

      • the problem is

we've heard of all this bands, and seem them at shitty venues with local supports for £6/7 (the majority of the fans bit anyway)

      bobbi_soccer @bobbi_soccer | 24 Feb '09, 12:32 | X
      • Surely part of the appeal of ATP (for me anyway)

was NOT knowing all the bands, turning up at a random stage and being blown away (or not) by a band / act you wouldn't previously have bothered with. Using bobbi_soccer's example up there ^ somewhere Lungfish spring to mind and countless others over the years. What's with the big band fixation?

            • Well, and a degree of NOT SERIOUS

There's quite a lot of serious bands in the line-up. Or at least that's my impression of them. As I'd said, it's just a line-up that's nowhere near an ATP I'd choose to go to yet, and unfortunately none of the bands that have been confirmed so far are at all in line with the ones I voted for.

It's a gamble booking tickets for this one, it's not ATP's fault really. It's just unfortunate it's not shaping up to be a great festival for me and my tastes.

One of my friends, who normally loves stuff like Au Revoir Simone, got really into the Locust at decembers ATP and thought Teenage Jesus and The Jerks were her favourite band of the festival. Surely part of what makes ATP great is discovering new things?
By the way Jesus Lizard, Marnie Stern, Electric Wizard, HEALTH, Devo: All FUN

                jedeteste @fionapinkstars | 24 Feb '09, 14:20 | X
                • HEALTH are crap, but that's besides the point

It's not shaping up to be my cup of tea, that's all. It's not like I don't know these bands; it's that I don't actually like a vast majority of them. Or am at least fairly un-fussed by them. I'm willing to be surprised, but right now I'm quite unexcited.

                • Marnie Stern will be awesome

if she's half as good as the records :D

          • Yes.

            • Yeah me too

Getting people to come along to this one was always going to be a tall feat given some of our financial predicaments, but the line up isn't helping me out much in recent weeks.

With each passing update, I WANT to go to The Breeders one more but can't (at a wedding) and continue to only be interested in the first handful of acts who confirmed for this one.

              vamos @fionapinkstars | 24 Feb '09, 14:22 | X
    • It's just occured to me

that I didn't vote for the Cocteau Twins. My fingers will be kept crossed!

Killing Joke and School of Seven Bells are both good news - The line-up is totally awesome.

More votes for William Basinski too, please :)

  • Harvey Milk confirmed

They're on the ATP ad in the new issue of Uncut I just flicked through in WHSmiths.

    • ^i was just about to mention that

      beat me to it

      chasingabee @baraccas | 24 Feb '09, 14:36 | X
    • If Harvey Milk play

then Joe Preston will be there!

We should start a campaign to get Thrones to play a set, like the (admittedly unsuccessful) one to get Andrew WK to play solo at vs The Fans after Current 93 were announced...

      Battlecat @baraccas | 24 Feb '09, 14:48 | X
      • Andrew WK, with Joe Preston as his bassist.

is there going to be a new chart posted? some of my friends haven't voted yet.

    dave_5000 | 24 Feb '09, 15:24 | X
    • Not Fire Dances

see Jamie Summers' post above, that's about right. For the record my favourite is Extremities.

  • any breeders

    additions coming up?

    champo | 24 Feb '09, 16:17 | X
    • ^this

The Breeders ATP seems to be continually taking a back seat to The Fans Strike Back.

      badmanreturns @champo | 24 Feb '09, 18:26 | X
  • All the best

bands were listed when the event was first announced. ATP's selections since have been particularly underwhelming. I dont think as many people would be disappointed had Devo, Sleep, etc, been announced later in the voting process. People obviously expected further luminaries and unlikely reformations.

  • Harvey Milk

    Officially confirmed.

      • very soon

just hammering in a few confirmations. tis good stuff, if we get it all.

        • Good stuff.

Might be worth remembering that my girlfriend is planning on finding you during Breeders weekend and kicking you in the cubes over the release the bats incident, so you might want to make the additions Mrs Huntspill friendly. Or buy some padding.
