hmm i'll have a listen, but after the last two rather underwhelming efforts i'll be a bit wary. i'm a MASSIVE NY fan, mostly down to my dads influence. he has all the buffalo albums plus the first 18 ny albums on vinyl (including the lost albums), and so i've become rather obsessed. he also went to canada to follow the deja vu tour for four gigs when he was young. the bastard.
only problem is that the one time i've got to see neil (on the greendale tour) he was absolutely awful (mostly down to the completely underwhelming nature of that album). still, a genius. and an innovator, and one of the most influential musicians of all time.
I've got After the Goldrush and it is absolutely class from start to finish. I might have to buy some of the older stuff before I look at the new stuff. I should have some more by now given that I loves the Goldrush.
get harvest, then everybody knows this is nowhere, then zuma, then on the beach, then tonight's the night, then time fades away (if you can find it), then decade, then rust never sleeps, then live rust, in roughly that order.
also worth checking out:
mirror ball, sleeps with angels, weld, freedom, hawks and doves, american stars & bars, long may you run, the self titled debut.
ones to avoid at first, but you could try them out later cos some stuff is actually quite good: everybody's rockin, trans, old ways, re-ac-tor, harvest moon, silver & gold, are you passionate
ones to avoid quite a bit: life, landing on water, greendale
oh and you should really buy all the buffalo springfield albums plus deja vu and four way street by crosby, stills, nash & young.
in my experience harvest moon was a good starting point. was the third one i bought, and the one that convinced my friend who's now got a healthy obsession with the great man. also, he'd heard harvest previously and wasn't taken.
also, the unplugged albums awesome, done aroudn about the time of harvest moon, so has a few more off that on there.
anyway, as above, buy everything you can afford. fopp's always good for a £5 neil young blitz.
i've always thought that harvest moon had too much of a feeling of consciously trying to be another harvest. it's not just the sound, production or band, but for some reason i just dont think its sounds quite right songwriting wise. but maybe its just me.
yeh the rns dvd is great, shame about the slightly crappy video quality tho.
what will be truly amaizng is when the 15 years in the waiting archives box set finally comes out. there are something like 10 albums worth of confirmed unreleased songs out there, and some of them are absolutely incredible, the most famous being the original 30minute, 11 verse version of Sixty To Zero, an extract of which appears on the freedom album. oh, plus all the songs from the cancelled Homestead album would be stuck on archives, as well as rarities from albums like Journey To The Past.
rumour has it archives might actually come out following the new album, so start saving those pennies.
that reminds me i need to give freedom another go, its fallen victim to 'too-much-music' syndrome (and i thought that could never happen) as discussed on the downloads thread.
yeah, poor quality or the lighting at the filming was set to grainy.
not many folk warrant a box set (johnny cash, the fall), but thats one i'll have to save for, and by the sounds of it, there'll be alot of saving required

Re: I love Neil Young (not physically)
think it was a combo of the time it was recorded plus the dvd being a straight transfer from old video without remastering.
