I made the pilgramage o see a top band playing for free in Reading, and so did quite a few others I'm pleased to say....
Although flippin heck, it's a long time since I've been to a gig where so many people were talking all the time........
Quality venue TheOakford - long may it last in Reading.
I did the gig leaving my house at 8.15 and getting back (with cd and 7") at 9.55 - excellent!!
But it's really horrible having the stage in the middle of that huge bar. It means you have a group of people watching a gig in the centre and then large amounts of people either side who are just there to drink and socialise.
Because it's free entry and there's no real segregation, this then results in what nickd was talking about - really, REALLY loud talking all the way through the show from the people who are just there to enjoy the bar.
It's an awful feeling playing to such a loud background murmour and similarly annoying when you're there to watch a gig :(
I really wish they'd make it a separate room somehow, because it's a decent venue otherwise. Not to mention finally a promoter in reading who's putting on some great bands, and for free as well (sterling work Dave).
there was so much talking - and to tell you the truth, that's never really happened to me before at The Oakford. Late Of The Pier (amazing to think that was a freebie), Vessels, I Concur, all played without the sort of drone that accompanied last night's gig.
I walked to the left hand side of the stage where people weren't talking - it was awful on the right hand part although the view was best.
But I suppose for free you can't complain too much although quite why some of the punters seemed to be watching the band and talking (very loudly!) almost to a point where you couldn't hear what the front man was saying between the songs - was beyond me.
Fanfarlo were good though - I wish I knew their stuff a bit better than I did as they seemed a lot more complex than I recalled on vinyl.
They have some interesting tracks and Arcade Fire influences (a positive thing) as well as having their own sound.
I bought the CD so now I have the chance of investigating in a bit more depth.
Anything else set for the Oakford?
I see Vessels are back again for a third gig there - sure to be a decent one.
action beat on wednesday, though.
Don't miss that one. I can't wait to see them again, but worried about the topic of our previous posts.
and myself and Pete who co-promoted this gig with me, would like to say a BIG thank you to everyone who came down! Overall it was a great night!
I agree that the talking during the bands was annoying but sadly I think we had a mixture of fans and randoms who were just there out of curiousity. Sorry about that but normally during my gigs, people are pretty quiet.
However Sun 12th April will be the third visit from Vessels. They're be too loud for people to talk over! :)
I really enjoyed it, 4th time I've seen them an that was probably the most enjoyable. Scored the album and 7" and a t-shirt, hear they sold about two dozen albums which is pretty cool for them. Only bugger was having to miss the encore to catch the start of Mumford and Sons up the road. (Takes 8 minutes, I did a dry run earlier in the day.)
Pretty much think the talking is just as unavoidable at anything with a half decent crowd. Like umbrellas at festivals it's always going to a pain but what can you do.
Definitely good to good promoters putting on great bands in Reading, slightly annoying for me as I moved to Scotland last month. Sure I can make the odd weekend visit.
Weirdly fascinating to watch Cathy knitting beforehand as well.
Hi. I'm the aforementioned Pete of Wonder Wheel Presents who put on the gig with dave. Really good to hear all the thoughts on the band, gig, venue and night as a whole. We were both really passionate about putting the band on and are glad that that was shared by so many others.
The background noise thing is a problem and i understand what people are saying...i put on a lot of more acoustic acts in 07 & 08 there under the name Menial Monkey where i asked people to quieten down before acts and put up running orders with a request for less noise during acts too. it works a little but, as you can image, its impossible to enforce without looking like a killjoy, espacially with full bands who you don't expect to be effected in this way.
As promoters, we want the nights to be busy but at the same time its vital that its enjoyable to the people who come down especially people who come a long way (thanks for that by the way mitchell and co!).
Everything Everything & Operahouse will be our next gig at the Oakford on Thursday 12th March...like the Vessels, i think they'll be loud enough to block out crowd noise but i'll also keep an eye out for shouty people and move them along! ;)
Pleased that there's lots of good comments about the night too...thanks again to everyone who came down
