I know its Regina Spektor etc etc..
but what is implied by the genre title?
i think it is specific to the nyc scene. best example - jeff lewis.
are darker/more "edgy"/more "unconventional" than the combined output of most "anti-folk" songsters.
Anti-folk is basically music made by people who want to sound like traditional folk music but are scared their scenester friends will laugh at them for being old-fashioned, and so they pretend they're doing something new.
well, maybe just the first part. Stories about vicious murders, alchoholics, leaving people in ditches to die etc.
Folk in its purest form though is just storytelling or relating the common experience through song. Which means that trying to define folk as a 'style' is throwing jelly at the wall, or something like that.
Anti-folk has its origins in the mid-1980s New York City singer-songwriter scene. It arose as a response to the commercialization of the Greenwich Village folk scene, and the mainstream fascination with it. Still commenting on social issues, anti-folk does its best to steer clear of the generic stereotypes attached to the history of the New York City folk music scene.
I gets it.
i.e. it was coined as being anti-a particular kind of music bill itself as folk in New York at the time rather than folk music as a historical entity.
whatever anti-folk may mean..
diane cluck is fucking amazing no?
i have a borderline obsession with her at the mo.
diane is AMAZING. she was the first person i ever interviewed, and here's what she defines antifolk to be (or at least what she defined it as in the summer of 2005)...
a n t i f o l k
at this point
if it means anything
who don’t give or get points for having technical chops
without an open heart to back it up
basically, you could be all heart and no technique
and you would be respected
the antifolk crowd i knew was very keen
and discerning on this point
in some ways it’s the only identifying characteristic
behind a widely diverse group of individuals
i don’t call myself antifolk
tho i don’t fight the label"
this blows me away!
I was confused about anti-folk as well.
..I’ll be honest; I’d rather listen to some skilled musicians playing tunes about making horseshoes/weaving etc.
