I love solid air and his cover of Sour Times is amazingly good, sad news
i later grew up and realised i was an idiot. rip big man
RIP John Martyn
who will be sorely missed. I listen to Bless the Weather pretty much every evening before bed...RIP
his stuff before solid air is lovely too.
Great artist who inspired so many other great artists.
Sad news. RIP.
He was a total mess when I saw him 3 years ago, and an unashamed arsehole to the people around him (if the BBC4 documentary was anything to go by) but still an absolute genius.
I am gutted.
But some great music nevertheless, his stuff on old grey whistle test in unsurpassable.
in so much as he'd just had his leg amputated, mostly due to drinking too much and was barely legible in between songs. Made even more striking by the fact that when he actually played songs they were perfect.
Solid Air and Bless the weather are albums that I grew up with and are still favourites of mine.
I saw him years ago with Danny Thompson, the late John Stevens and the late Paul Kossoff... Only DT left now.
'May You Never' is one of the sweetest songs ever.
Iv recently been listening to a instrumental version of small hours, post rock before it was invented.
Head And Heart has saved my sanity countless times. I love him.
He had only just heard the news and was gutted. Ended up playing Martyn and Nick Drake throughout the whole show. BBC London - you can find it on listen again, on iplayer.
"Mr. Martyn struggled with alcoholism throughout his adulthood, and in 1977 he went to Jamaica for his health. There he collaborated with Lee (Scratch) Perry."
Smart move, but probably not recommended by medical practitioners.
