"Two acts that have received some of the biggest critical acclaim over the past 12 months have been made ineligible for nominations because of a change in award rules. Previously artists were eligible to be nominated if they have had a single or album in the UK top 75, but this year it has been changed to the top 40.
This means that Mercury Prize-nominated Laura Marling, who would have been in the running, will fail to get a mention as her album Alas I Cannot Swim only peaked at number 45. Similarly, US singer Bon Iver, who featured in HMV's top 10 end of year poll of polls, reached number 42 with For Emma, Forever Ago and will also miss out"
What a load of shit, why not just have the best selling records of the year as the nominees for all the characters.

Best selling artist in each category usually wins.

but there's always a nugget of comfort when something a little less popular gets a nomination.
I always love how PJ Harvey has been nominated 5 or 6 times
and has never won, and has been beaten by luminaries such as Shola Ama and Sonique. Pretty much because both were having their 15 minutes of chart success around that time.

Look at the historical winners, it's often about the flash in the pans, the ones that had the media hype behind them and nothing else.

but there should be.
Because the merits of the music is entirely subjective.
Whereas sales are easily quantifiable.
I don't know why people get wound up by the Brits - it's a commercial awards ceremony with a corporate sponsor awarding commercial artists and commercial products. It's the way it is. Nobody would watch the awards if Bon Iver was winning best album, Laura Marling best female and of Montreal best international group. That also would not be representative of the music industry in this country, which defeats the whole point of the ceremony.

But Laura Marling at least did something last year (unlike MIA, whose last album was 18 months ago!) and both her and Bon Iver made a little impact, you can argue Marling at least deserves a nomination - also the rules have changed, so now you have to be top 40 rather than top 75 it seems, which is pretty unfair and is the reason why those two have missed out.

it was excruciating. i don't think it's anti-pop snobbery that makes me think they're a terrible, terrible band.

ego boosting necessary for all the people already doing well (especially with the top 40 rule), plus the bags of cash from the free publicity that will immediately increase purchases of the winners cds. all these cds will shoot back up to the top of the charts, which is where they've been most of the year anyway.

also quite funny is that critics choice award, chosen by the record labels, awarded to all the big hyped, industry pushed bands for the year (florence, white lies, little boots). its like sainsburys awarding their own brand cereal the best in the whole store and then putting a sticker on the front calling it award winning cereal producer of the year
