Can anyone advise me on whats best to start with this band?
is a good place to start, its a compilation of their really early stuff.
I'll give these a go.
some of Kristin Hersh'es early solo albums are great too.
they need to throw their ears in a fire.
but I love every song on it, a complete 10/10 record. I'd say the best starting place is either limbo, university or the real ramona all really accessible. Avoid red heaven and the self titled ones. I hadn't investigated their earlier work until recently and it is slightly terrifying in a good way
but also where the you find the true soul of the band.
Basically, essential Kristin Hersh is the first four muses albums and Hips & Makers*, which all have their roots in Kristin's dealing with her mental illness. And the torment and anguish she communicates is, for me, every bit as powerful, disturbing and un-self-censored as anything Ian Curtis, Nick Drake or Kurt Cobain ever managed.
Everything thereafter is just top notch indie rock.
* Even though H&M came out a bit later, a lot of the songs date back to the same time period. And The Letter, one of the first songs she ever wrote, is probably the most devastating of the lot.
It's just two chords and sounds stream of consciousness but... damn...
or the self titled debut proper
I've so far enjoyed getting to know Teenage Fanclub and Bon Iver as well as actually listening the breeders and holy fuck. All part of my actually know the bands' music plan for this year
the head honchos have been running shows/festivals for the last 10 or 11 days running so thats been taking priority
I am the lamest person ever
and then work back from there.
But it is very hard to go wrong to be honest. It's all gold.
Start at the beginning and work forward ;-)
(Sorry, sunbaked; just wanted to confuse peeps - we can at least agree The Letter is the dog's, though ;-) )
everything else is immaterial
