Is f*cking class. we can all agree on that. I only have 'Fuigure 8' - but where to go next....? Suggestions?
It's interesting to chart his progression - Roman Candle (1994) is his first record and is just guitar and vocal home recordings. S/t (1995) has light drumming and a bit of multi instrumentation. Either/Or (1997) has bass and drums (check out 'Ballad of Big Nothing') but still sounds a bit lo-fi. XO (1998) has stuff like Baby Britain that sounds like it was done in a 'proper' studio with more piano and stuff.
What are your favourite moments on Figure 8? There are so many places to go and as I've said further down there are great songs on every record, so wherever you go you shouldn't be disappointed.
both superior to Figure 8 I reckon, though every album is great in its own way. Thinking about it, New Moon might be a good place to go next too - two discs of awesome right there.
Oh - and XO is far, far better than "solid enough"!
XO is probably my favourite album.
it takes a bit to get into though, the melodies are really well hidden which makes it even better when you find them!
either/or or xo next I'd say
..I'd say try either/or next
I recently fell in love with the first two tracks on Roman Candle - for a long time I listened to Figure 8, Either/Or and XO the most. I came to From A Basement... quite late; Coast to Coast really made me sit up and take notice - to me it sounds just how it would inside the mind of a paranoid junkie and it's absolutely terrifying.
Overall I think he has to be one of the most consistent songwriters of his generation - utter genius
Plus it has Angeles on. You won't be upset by XO though.
the beginning, Roman Candle is class.., also, his old band Heatmiser are cool too; Mic City Sons is a really good album..
I stated at new moon, they're all fucking class though. Troubled Soul :(
It's the first one I heard and it's been top of my Elliott chart ever since
ES is better than most every singer/songwriter because he wrote lines like ^.
is really underrated. people always said it was his "sell out" record. that's always a stupid debate to have anyway. but if any record had production that distanced him from the songs for me it was XO. even tho it had some amazing songs on. my personal favourites are Figure 8 and Roman Candle
A really class record, which is full of awesome, simple and tender arrangements and great song-writing.
Either/Or is close after.
