girl talk, E-603, Easter Egg, The Hood Internet etc..
and Girl Talk is great, but everything I've heard by the Hood Internet is shit. Mashups are good in small doses or when you're in a club or something, but not all the time, it wears a bit thin.
is really good
hood internet is good
uv just gotta look
It doesn't really offer anything new. It's the sort of thing teenage NME readers would probably dig. I know it's probably not far off from Girl Talk but it sounds a bit too derivative for my liking.
the hood internet are fantastic, especially nowadays. they actually make really good beats out of songs, rather than pasting an a cappela over an instrumental and calling it a day. i can't really see where the nme reader thing comes from, surely a huge percent of everything they use (whether its the hip hop a cappellas or the bands they sample) is more pitchfork centric than nme. like their chicago mixtape http://www.thehoodinternet.com/2008/05/hood-internet-vs-chicago.html you can probably count on one hand the number of the artists on that which have even been written about once in the nme, let alone are nme darlings. plus that mixtape is brilliant, totally inspired. i don't really know what you mean by derivative either, of what exactly? i can't think of anything else which did mash ups with stuff as left field as hood internet do
But my friend's sent me various tracks with Fleet Foxes, Flying Lotus, Holy Fuck etc...I didn't really learn anything new. It just sounds like Go Home Productions but with different tracks, I can't see what the appeal is, other than the fact that they're using more recent and popular tracks.
if you don't like that, fair enough i guess, but its really good.
grey album's good as well
but they do all sound fairly similar
Beethoven's Fifth Gold Digger (Kanye West Remix) and Going Back To Dani (Notorious B.I.G.vs. Red Hot Chili Pepers)
on hype machine
is absolutley awesome, i LOVE it.
wale vs parenthetical girls is amazing.
it can be lots of fun, but I find it to be really hit and miss. Girl Talk's last one is kinda fun but I think I like the Soulwax way of doing things better. I like their way of just doing a DJ set and then throwing stuff together in amongst other non mash up stuff.
there are hundreds of great bootlegs (aka mashups) out there
but also thousands of bad ones.
so, yeah some gems amoung the ruff
best one of the last few months for me was "wax audio - enter you"
