1 my favourite thing of 2009 so far. THG are the people behind singing knives records (a great label) and this is all weird foresty explorations
4 really great cheap organ drones and acoustic guitar bits and weird vocals from tennessee. see 8) for how to buy.
5c can't get enough kuupuu
8 really great electrical drones and warm fuzzes and stuff. my label has just released a cdr by him. colourride.co.uk for info y'all.
9 getting more into it
10b potential highlight of 2009
14b good sounds from Maths Balance Volume member

1) Shot is dead good, possibly better than Goat. But not better than Liar. I like the crazy spoken word beat poet stuff. Nice.
2) Forgotten band of my youth No. 1567: Thanks to the 90s American Indie thread for making me put on Ride The Fader once more. Great band. Maybe I should get their other album.
4) Well worth £2. Cheers, Holy Roar.
9) a) Sugar are almost as good as Husker Du. I like Copper Blue a lot having heard it only once. Was it really NME's album of the year back in the day?!!
Shot is so good
I like the lyrics. Or the delivery of them maybe
"We're gonna ask the landlord, why he's been such a cock!"
"They found him, in a latriiiiiine hiding. Dressed in clothes 15 layers deep!"
I used to love Sugar,
They were one of the first bands I really got into. I can still remember going to buy Beaster on cassette from Woolworths on the day it was released.
NME's album of the year
AND i'm pretty sure it came out on Creation.

2 - OMG amazing. Spotify is worth it for his music alone. Fucking amazing.
3 - I listened to all three studio albums on Spotify. The last one is so much better that Do Dallas
4a - I really should've listened to this band before, Dummy and Third are both amazing amazing albums.

It's not like Windows Media Player or iTunes have friend functions. But yeah, it is probably the best thing to happen to music for years

10) Chinese Democracy gets better after you've heard it a few times
So do you have to type in what you're listening to yourself?
Sounds like a step too far for the lazy :(
not each individual track
you search for the artist, choose the album from the list and then press scrobble. the only annoying thing is you have to log in each time you use it.

I bet that weird moving cover barely works in real life y'know.
you should listen to zomby its like that animal colective cover
but for your ears!
heh
sounds better than animal collective for your ears!
Actually the one Animal Collective album I listened to I quite liked actually so I don't know why i'm saying that. I blame the internet
bloody internet!
week before my exams
my scrobbles increase 6000%, all i do is hermit up with music and stare at notes.
the animal collective album is so much more cohesive than anything they've done before, far easier listening.
I have also been exam hermitting
It's really boring and I can't wait for it to finish! Also I can only listen to music that has about two notes in otherwise getting distracted happens. Then comes the dancing
i'm so certain
i can't revise with any sound around at all, i barely take anything in. but if i don't... it would just be too boring spending that many hours in solitude.
music makes me feel like i'm being social. :D

7a) Another emusic purchase. Odd, but pretty good.
*Why the fuck has last.fm scrobbled half the Dexys tracks as Dexy's? They're all tagged correctly. It really fucking grinds my gears when it then tells me to fix my tags. FUCK OFF FUCK OFF FUCK OFF FUCK OFF FUCK OFF FUCK OFF FUCK OFF FUCK OFF FUCK OFF FUCK OFF IT'S SO FUCKING ANNOYING.
is that
naked acid by valet? i quite like that. :)
It is.
It was on the emusic homepage, and the cover intrigued me.
It's odd in a Sunburned Hand/Jackie O Mofo kind of way.
i never fall
for emusic ploys! although they do entice you with loads of pretty artwork on the front page. i just can't trust a recommendation from an organisation after your money, hah.
i don't think you've made a mistake though, i enjoyed that valet lp a lot... definitely a grower.
Dexy is midnight runners though
I had a quick listen to that Valet thing on last.fm. It should be more odd/odder/whateveritis
naked acid
that was
Yep,
It was on the Wire Avant Rock end of year list, rather than Outer Limits so it's not REALLY odd.
Heh
I have no clue how they worked those two out
I've listened to Gang Starr for
the first time in ages this week too. I think it was that hip hop thread earlier in the week. The Guru makes it seem so effortless.

DOK! awsome dancy grime instrumentals.
Wiley's war dubs as him and Durrty Goodz are beefing at the moment. Goodz called Wiley 'the winehouse of grime' lol.
Soso http://drownedinsound.com/community/boards/music/4154909?community a kind of hiphop, ambient, folk, electronica, hybrid its like a beautiful version of Why? and less annoying.

See above for details :)
oh cool thats interesting
I do mostly listen to CD's and 12" on my decks, I was wondering when you could scroble stuff like that. I will see how much effort it is heheh.
It's pretty easy to use
but a little limited. It uses discogs.com for it's catalogues, so if your stuff is on there you can scrobble it. Better than nothing though.
yeah discogs is usualy really good
I often use it for finding dance artists stuff.
I will just have to try and remember to be bothered about clicking stuff when I listen, which I doubt I will after a day or so.
heh
I dunno if Why? is that annoying. That Subtle guy's voice is quite annoying. Why? = Bill Withers or something compared to him
I find Yoni's voice has grown to grate on me quite alot
I really have to be in the mood for them or I end up getting in a mood heheh
he really should stop
inhaling all the helium. He sounds like Isaac Hayes normally
I used to like Why? a lot
Until I realised he was just putting together non sensical couplets of meaningless verse over a pretty boring backing band. His lyrics sound like he's been sitting in a cafe jotting down pointless witticisms on napkins. And the band just don't really bother.
I still like em I guess
I haven't heard the new album but The Ex followed by Why at Roskilde (those Danish people with their alphabet jokes) was the best one two punch ever! I dunno what they are like now but it was a three piece kinda sharing all the instruments. And the drummer doing the vibraphone thing at the same time as the drums. Ace to watch.
i guess some of the lyrics might be tosh
I like the way the words sound though
I just feel cheated by them I think
They sound so much cleverer than they are. And when I realised they weren't all that clever, I got annoyed. Cause I'm a bit of an idiot like that....
I'm listening to "Better Days Will Haunt You" on Spotify. Chavez have actually got even more awesome. Break Up Your Band is brilliant.
:)
I get the feeling that _he_ knows exactly what he's talking about at least. That's good enough for me I guess
Chavez are ace. Those songs that weren't on the two albums are really good too. "You Faded" and the one about 'shooting blanks agaaain'. I think that one is 'hack the sides away'

talking of wfmu again I listen to this show this morning and it was incredible
http://www.wfmu.org/playlists/shows/29962
It started off with half an hour of gamelan that was just unbelievable. I'm sure all the kids listen to gamelan these days but I hadn't listened to it since a music lesson at school once and was a bit blown away. Also he played Akron/Family and they were great too. I had them previously marked down as shite.
new akorn famly is all country rock idk teh old stuff wsa sad songs
i like vxpxc
I don't like sad :(
Yeah the new vxpxc cd I got is weird. Lots of accordion and hitting pots and pans or something. Some of it is really good
htis ducktailes radio shwo is real good huh
do yuo liek predator vision
I haven't heard it yet
I saw he has another band called 'Angelfire'. It sounds cooler when it isn't a crap website.
predator vision cd i got is real good
yeah
I like how he can't sing that one song properly and keeps having to go FIVE SIX at the end of every line. The extended jam bit is great
i've had
ducktails II cassette for a while now, but never listened to it. will now.
you should
oh well you probably already have now. But it might be ok for revision that sort of thing
i have
it's a brilliant little album. i particularly bum "status quo", but only because it's more immediate. definitely revision music! do you have any of their output?
i found a mudboy/ducktails split and i'm quite digging mudboy now, but probably only because ducktails mellowed me out. it reminds me of the archers a bit, can hear people walking down paths. the ducktails side is immense though, definitely recommend it.
i have a linky if you're into that kind of illegal thing.
heh
It's cool. I could google. I have II and another split tape with Golden Cup/Gang Wizard/someoneelseIdunno that has what I think might be slightly different versions of songs from II but may be exactly the same. Money may have been wasted there. Also the s/t 7" has three great tunes on it. I would track that one down fo sho!
Mudboy sounds good. I like it when you can't tell if the sounds are on the tape or outside your window.

I totally blame rediscovering 'Knockers' for my top artist this week.
Also, an entire week without Marnie Stern! Perhaps I can wean myself off after all...

1) SO MUCH FUN
3+4) Really great to listen to when I'm pottering in the afternoon. Would like some more free jazz so recommendations are welcome
14) not listened to enough of them, but am fixing that by raiding ebay.
I'm enjoying saying
Melt-Banana Charlie Parker Melt-Banana Charlie Parker Melt-Banana Charlie Parker Melt-Banana Charlie Parker Melt-Banana Charlie Parker

Free Jazz
Try some Peter (and Caspar for that matter) Brotzmann for some wild unhinged sax (go for "Machine Gun" in Peter Brotzmann's case). If you're feeling really adventurous check out Cecil Taylor ("Live in Bologna" is as good as anywhere for a baptism of fire). Also John Coltrane's "The Ascension" is essential.
You really have to get some Ornette Coleman too. Try his album with Don Cherry "Free Jazz: A Collective Improvisation". Don Cherry is a beautiful trumpet player (check out his album "Brown Rice"...the track "Malkauns" contains the best trumpet solo I have ever heard)
^
The last.fm artist radio is really good for feeling your way into jazz. A lot of the free stuff is too full on me, but I've been getting into Archie Shepp, Pharoah Sanders, Sun Ra etc recently.
The Alice Coltrane similar artist radio usually throws up some good stuff.
thanks guys x
Miles Davis and Charlie Parker aren't really free jazz?
Free jazz completely exhausts me. It's so intense it hurts.
I know they're not
but I want to get hold of some and don't know what to begin with.
Peter Brotzmann may very well make your
ears fall off. He is heavy!

this group is cool too if you want even more, the main guy has recommended me some really good stuff

I heard a Mayyors song
on the radio, it was really good. I think they might be the best band with a needless extra consonant since Wizardzz
I 'acquired' a few MP3s of theirs through the week
the 7" is a beast, ridiculously loud.
Mayyors are great
Two of the best 7"s released last year. This video is cool

L. Voag is a bloke who was in the Homosexuals. He made this really strange album which shifts between almost any genre you can name.
You can get the Sightings album 'Absolutes' for £4 ppd from Riot Season at the moment.
I saw the film Black Christmas (70s version) over christmas. The prank phonecalls made by the killer sound like the new Hair Police cd in places. Weird vocals and other odd sounds manipulated.
do yuo like teh new teenagepanzerkorps
That Black Christmas guy freaked me out
"Keep the baby, you stupid bitch!!" or whatever he was saying. Actually quite disturbing. You would've thought that Roper from Enter The Dragon would've worked out where he was quicker though, eejit

1 had a Death Cab 09 Fest at work one day, it was brilliant
2 first two albums are proper good, despite recording costs probably about equal to what i usually spend on milk every week
8 my current 'hey, it's 5am and i'm wasted' band of choice ("and i don't wanna die alone")
