until they reach a grand, majestic finish.
Off ( ) is the best example I .
are still probably the biggest sounding thing i've seen at a concert
by Okkervil River. Fucking glorious.
by the New Pornographers
goodbye sky harbour.
by the drones
Seriously, if you check anything out of the stuff thats being suggested, makes sure it's this, I get goosebumps everytime I hear it, and it is just the climax of climaxes...if only the end lasted 15 seconds longer it would the greatest song in existence ever.
and has a beast of a riff in its first peak
by Death Cab
too soon. Any explosions in the sky track really
So, so much.
Or Sleep by Godspeed.
Olafur Arnaulds - 3055
The currently active Big Sleep are probably well vexed about us having that URL. Oh well.
Actually, Happiest Day Of They Year is one gigantic climax so listen to that. I miss playing it.
With 65 days of static, and Your code name is milo at the Underworld. You were pretty good, not that I really remember it.
My abiding memory of that was that we got a souncheck and 65Days didn't, so the entire time we soundchecked the spikey haired dude from 65days just sat on the floor in front of the stage glaring at us. Maximum lolz.
Haha, I saw you guys at Backline Studios in Guildford yearsssss ago. I keep seeing an album in Collector's Records Centre in Guildford by "The Big Sleep" and thinking "it can't be that band I saw at Backline".
Was that the one with MMISL? That was an awesome gig, I used to loved playing Guildford...ages ago now...it's well weird thinking back about it
It might have been with MMISL. I remember it being an all-dayer, and I remember really enjoying your set.
Either way, it is strange to be having this "conversation"!
and it's www.myspace.com/sonofthetiger i think
Nooo, that's different band!
Although only shallows band sound good
I love that song.
Oceansize - Ornament/The Last Wrongs
plus lots of Godspeed and lots of EitS
laughable that no-one's mentioned it yet. All that incredible tension and then the beautiful release at the end where Verlaine and Lloyd makes their guitars sound like birds in the trees. Some live versions I've heard are even more amazing.
but then it goes back into the verse bit, and I always feel it's bit of a let down. I mean, not the song, as in it's entirity it's awesome, but I wouldn't say the last bit was the 'climax' as such. The solo in the middle, definately, builds and builds.
ummmm, my body is a cage by arcade fire?
white lies, be in the same thread as god speed and sigur ros, can anyone tell me what they see in this band??
by Godspeed You! Black Emperor (on Lift Yr Skinny Fists...)
the last track off At the Soundless Dawn by Red Sparowes.. awesome..
and how about the greatest ANTI-climax to a song after a majestic build up?
Blood brothers - The Shame.. its almost as good as a climax
just that huge huge huge build up and then nothing. i remember they started playing it live on their last few shows, hearing it in leeds was a dream come true
it takes many minerals to do a build up like that then, nothing.
Compare the start of the track to the end. Its unreal.
LCD are the masters of building songs.
they couldn't build a sandcastle
then say that
I couldn't find a lot of them, though.
Lovely Allen is superb.
by the beatles, or Shine A Light by Spiritualized are good examples, maybe?
repose in blue by eluvium is another good one.
Hope of the States- Black Dollar Bills, Static In The Cities, A Heart Can Stop A Bullet e.t.c, e.t.c
and another vote for Sigur Ros- Untitled 8 and DCFC- Transatlanticism
This is the One
Although, I wouldn't say they're all magestic exactly
Vessels - Altered Beast
Sigur Ros - Untitled 8 (the best example, but there are so many)
By The End of Tonight - Uncontrollable Like A Teenage Daughter
Converge - Homewrecker
GY!BE - Rockets Fall on Rocket Falls
The Mars Volta - Miranda That Ghost..
Oceansize - Massive Bereavement
Her Name Is Calla - Motherfucker! it's Alive and it's Bleeding
There are loads more, but my brain has just died on me.
It's pretty relentless the whole way through. It's the sort of song that could induce a heart attack.
it's a subtle build up - that sounds a strange thing to say but it starts like pretty intense hardcore and gets even more intense later on. There is definitely a build up of some kind, although it isn't magestic, that's for sure.
Ahh, forget it. Maybe you're right :)
Any other grievances?
pretty much defines 'builds and builds', no?
but I don't really get why so many people love this song, it wouldn't even make my top 10 songs of theirs.
but rather like Comforting Sounds
it is one of the most comforting songs i have ever heard.
the song is like getting an enormous bearhug off someone, and getting a bit emotional because you're getting a hug just when you need one, and them hugging you more because you're getting a bit emotional.
I think that's the best example.
And NIN's Closer.
It starts with Adrian Belew's guitar that sounds like an approaching train, then "Here Am I...." and your eyes will widen... and then Bowie caps it with "Its not the side effects of the cocaine/ I'm thinking that it must be love"
It's too late to be grateful
It's too late to be late again
It's too late to be hateful
Listen to the Christiane F. live version too!
Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds
As well as millions of other songs
by Forward Russia
The time of my life.
That riff = woah. Plus Steve Snere's screams are unsettling.
listened to that recently for the first time in years. COR.
by This Will Destroy You
Also Xmas steps, surely
relentless fours, immense as a live set closer but hard to track down recordings
Hyperballad. Rebellion (Lies) by Arcade Fire maybe.
How did I not think of this one first?
or indeed most of the tracks off their most recent effort - Alles Wieder Offen
i thought i'd state the obvious, but you know... it definitely has a grand/majestic finish!
isis-so did we
oceansize-ornament/the last wrongs
I know they are not DiS but this is their MO!
has a pretty rad build up...
and an AWWWESOME scream!!
that should be a thread of its own.
MOST AWESOME SCREAM?
though, i cant think of any better...
"is it heavier than air...
IS IT HEAVIERRR!!"
quite a goodun... although .. i guess he did it everytime.
Cobains was a special one.
are hard screams to beat.
you should TOTALLY do a thread on this and see how many people
say 'the who - won't get fooled again' (although it is awesome)...and i'll just write down
many, many cedric ATDI and TMV screams!
innit. You don't even really notice how fucking HUUUUGE it's become by the end.
fast, then calm, then BUILD
They're younger than me!
but the Divine Comedy's cover of Radioactivity does this perfectly.
But I was going to suggest 'Bells of Creation' off the new EP too. The climax is so spectacular, I had one!
